Height:: 5-11
Weight:: 208
40 Yard Dash :: 4.3

Sportingnews Breakdown

Coverage skills: Has the size, athleticism and speed to cover tight ends man-to-man all over the field, and is solid covering slot receivers. When in center field, reads quarterbacks well and comes up quickly to deliver violent hits. Gets a quick jump on deep outside passes, and has the speed to arrive in time to play the ball. Grade: 8.0

Run/pass recognition: Does not misread plays, and reacts in a blink. Flies upfield quickly in run support, and backpedals quickly against the pass. Almost never gets sucked in by play-action fakes. Grade: 8.0

Closing speed: Shows explosive closing burst to deliver violent hits in run support and get outside in time to break up downfield passes. If making a bad step in man-to-man coverage, shows the burst to recover. Grade: 8.5

Ball skills: Shows excellent hands to make tough interceptions. Shows good leaping ability when cutting in front of receivers on deep, sideline routes. When not in position to intercept balls, uses front arm to reach in front of receivers to break up passes. Grade: 8.5

Run support: Is aggressive; attacks plays consistently. Can sink hips and explode up into ballcarriers to make strong tackles. Is sometimes overaggressive when flying upfield, and thus lunges and misses some tackles. Grade: 7.5

Bottom line: Nelson, an early-entry junior, is no doubt ready to play in the NFL and his stock wouldn't have been much higher if he had waited a year. He is amazingly productive and always seems to make big plays at crunch time. Nelson's energy and aggressiveness is infectious, helping to raise the level of an entire defense. He also can start at either free or strong safety.

Reggie Nelson A.K.A. Mr. Wonderlic! It scares me that he is not a very smart person. No offense,but not to sure I would want a guy with issues learning.The FS is the one that sets the defense. At the next level,studing,will be a huge part of his game. Can he learn the playbook? Can he break down film? Can he make the adjustments needed on defense? Can he line the defense up right? These will be questions,I am sure will be asked to find out what he has.

In my opinion he would excell, why?, because he knows football. He's field smart, probably not book smart but field smart. So I wouldnt compare his school learning towards football.

I feel these obstacles in the combine can be overrated. Nelson is going to be a good player. If we can't get Dwayne Jarrett or Aaron Ross I think we should get him.

Forget all that. Can he play football? Does he make plays? Just because he might score a 15 on an ACT test doesnt lessen the fact the the man can make plays on a football field, and is very instinctive. I'd love to draft him.

How many FS and/or DB's do we need on this team? We have 2 first rounders (Williams and Newman), a 2nd rounder (Hamlin), and a high priced free agent(Henry) I can hear mickey right now "you can't have a steak on every plate."

plus do we need a guy who has the mentel prowess of a brick?

Ive never agreed with this philosophy one bit. You cannot draft based on how you have drafted in the past. If you have need at a position you need it whether or not you have 18 1st rounders at the spot.

using this reasoning we couldnt draft any position other than QB, FB or DT as the rest of the spots are littered with 1st and 2nd rounders. And whoever we pick at 22 is not going to even remotely resemble the prices people are getting on the FA market nowadays.

Can he play? That is the most important question.

I don't know. Can he?

And the notion of can he play football only is sticking your head in the sand. All NFL players have to be reasonably intelligent. It's not an unreasonable thought to worry about drafting a stupid football player. Not saying he is but you certainly would change your draft status of a player that was not intelligent enough whatever that is.

And I agree tests aren't always an entirely accurate reflection of intelligence or the ability to QB the DBs.

There's not an easy answer to the question.

Umm, draft zone?

How many threads can we have about a FS... we signed Hamlin and have a project in Watkins.

Hamlin blows in coverage and most realistic people realize that watkins isnt good. If you disagree and dont wanna talk about reggie nelson...then dont.
