NFL draft: Virginia Tech's Cody Grimm
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/hokies-journal/2010/04/nfl_draft_virginia_techs_cody.html

In anticipation for this weekend's NFL draft, Hokies Journal will be looking at some former Virginia Tech players who are prospective draftees. The NFL draft opens with the first round on Thursday evening, followed by the second and third rounds on Friday and the fourth through seventh rounds held on Saturday.

CODY GRIMM
5 feet 11, 210 pounds
Projected draft selection: sixth round
Projected NFL position: strong safety
Virginia Tech career: 15 starts, 214 tackles, 11 ½ sacks, 26 ½ tackles for loss, 9 forced fumbles

Cody Grimm was an a first-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection at linebacker for Virginia Tech but he almost certainly will not play that position at the next level. If Grimm is going to have an NFL future, he has been told he fits best as a strong safety.

While that much seems widely agreed upon, little else is as certain with Grimm when it comes to the draft. He has been told he could be selected anywhere from the fifth round to not at all.

"For real, I haven’t through about it too much," Grimm said in a recent telephone interview. "I feel like I should be getting nervous. I don’t think about it too often."

Grimm is undersize and perhaps a step slow to play in the secondary, but he has heard those knocks in the past and has always defied expectations. What defines Grimm's style is is aggressiveness and his instinctual ability to always find himself in the middle of the play, oftentimes at the bottom of the pile after making a tackle. He has a tremendous football sense, which often made up for any physical disadvantages he had against competitors in college. Now NFL executives will have to weigh how that translates at the next level.

(For the record, Grimm said he has not fielded any inquiries by the Arizona Cardinals; his father, Russ, is the assistant head coach of the team. He has, however, been out to San Diego to meet with the Chargers.)

Grimm said playing strong safety, where he fits at the next level, would not phase him because that position often plays in the box in run support or to blitz, and he said he felt capable in halves or quarters coverage. Grimm has an uncanny knack for coming of the edge with blitzes and has experience guarding tight ends in coverage, but there are questions about whether he has the speed to keep up with NFL receivers in coverage. Grimm has worked out in Phoenix and nearby his parents' home, in Fairfax, Va., as he prepares for the draft.

Grimm, who is laid back and easygoing, said he would remain at home and order pizza with his friends while watching the draft. Other than working out, he has been enjoying some free time to relax. While his draft stock might still be uncertain, Grimm does not seem to be too tense about the whole process.

"It's been a wild time," Grimm said. "I don’t have to get a job or anything; I already graduated school, all my other buddies are working. I've been about to work out and fish. Not many people get this opportunity."
