Well, Dallas is certainly stocked at this position IMO and I'd say we have the best TE in the division and one of the best in the NFL in Witten. In fact the number one TEs for the East are pretty set although a lot of teams including the Cowboys are trying to use the 12 or 13 more. Jason Witten, Brandon Myers, Brent Celek and Chris Cooley all currently rank in one list of top 24 fantasy league tight ends.
I don't think there would be a lot of dissent about Witten being the number one TE out of that group. I think Kevin Boss is a decent blocking and receiving TE; nothing special. I like Celek more and consider him more of a receiving threat. I've never gotten a good feel for Cooley. When healthy he's a good TE but he's suffered like the rest of the receiving corps for the Skins in not having a quality QB slinging the skin.
I'd rank them Witten, Celek, Myers then Cooley. The problem I have with this is not the ranking of the number one's but not ranking the entire group for each team. So here's my run down of the NFC East tight end personnel.
Dallas
Not going to spend a lot of time here as this has been hashed out thru multiple threads on this site. For me Witten is close to the prototypical TE although I'm not sure that's a good catch phrase to use anymore. Actually I'm not sure there are that many 'do all' players at every position anymore. Like a good boat, car or plane, a lot of NFL players are a combination of compromises for many. But Witten is old school and although not a great in line blocker or even average F/H back he's ok blocking. And he's one of the best receiving TEs I've ever seen. Not the best but HOF bound and has a chance of catching Gonzales assuming he retires before he's 45.
I really like Hanna who at 6-4 and 250 running a 4.5 should become a serious weapon for Dallas. I see him as the new prototypical receiving TE threat. These guys used to play RB. Big and fast but not as much missem' as needed to be a star in the NFL. Now they are stars at TE and getting paid like a WR rather than just a TE. If he gets enough snaps then he could be a star. He's not likely to get that much playing behind Witten but it could happen esp if Witten were to miss some games.
He's probably going to share a lot of snaps with Escobar who I see as a hybrid TE/WR. The guy's a big ole WR with great ability to adjust to the ball in flight and the hands to catch anything near him. If he ran a bit faster he'd have been a top pick in the draft. As it was he still went about where predicted and I think we're very fortunate to have the guy. Don't get hung up on the fact he's labeled as a TE. He's a receiver who is a move TE. I think this guy is going to be hard to keep off the field. Garrett, Calahan et al have their work cut out for them trying to balance this offense and spread the ball around with the current load of receivers.
NY Giants
Brandon Myers, Bear Pascoe, Adrien. Robinson, and.Larry Donnell are the NY football Giants (why DO they say that??) TEs in that roster order. Myers was drafted by Oakland in the 6th out of Iowa and he had 79 catchs for 806 yds and 4 TDs last year and I'd have to look up the QB for the Raiders. Not a big guy at 6-3 255. He had a 10.2 ypc last year which ain't bad. Pascoe is a bear at 6-5 285 and he was also drafted in the 6th by SF and is also in his 5th year. He was targeted 9 times and caught 4 for 1 TD so I'm guessing this guy is the designated blocking TE for Coughlin. Robinson was drafted by the Giants last year in the 4th and has no catches. So not a lot of information about the NY football Giants TEs although it appears Myers is the weapon of choice for Manning.
Their site also lists Jamie Childers out of Coastal Carolina and Chase Clement out of LSU who appear to be on the PS and have no stats. Childers was a UDFA pickup last year by the Rams and was cut after the first preseason game. He was a QB out of Wando HS in Charleston SC and played QB for CCU until his junior year. I don't have much else on him. Clement is a blocking TE signed as an UDFA out of LSU.
Philadelphia
Philly already has Celeck who is a dinkum good receiving TE IMO. Philadelphia added who was considered the second-best tight end of the 2013 draft, Stanford's Zach Ertz. Ertz is a smart player who knows how to run routes and moves well. He is one of the new breed of TEs and should absorb whatever Kelly throws at him with whatever he's going to run up there in Philly. I expect him to be a contributor his first year and won't be surprised if he at some point in the season displaces Celek as the go to TE. The Eagles added TE James Casey from the Texans to Celek, Clay Harbor, and Ertz. Kelly is on record as saying they aren't going to be installing his Oregon offense and won't run a lot of the read option either. Instead he has said to expect to see the 12 a good bit more. Sounds familiar huh? I don't know Harbor or Casey enough to pontificate about them but I expect the Eagles to be a handful this year especially if Vick stays healthy and has a good year. I can tell you that Casey and Ertz are very athletic TEs. The Eagles are a fast team that plays well in the open.
Commanders
F. Davis, L. Paulsen and J. Reed are the listed TEs on this year's depth chart. Jordan Reed was taken with the 23rd pick of the 3rd this year's draft and he's out of Florida. He's supposed to be an athletic TE. He's 6-2 and 230ish. He was a QB off and on but moved around a good bit.until settling in at TE last year where he led the receivers with 45 catches. He was supposedly benched in their bowl game for 'attitude' problems. Paulsen is 6-5 260 in his 4th season out of UCLA and caught 25 for a 12.3 ypc. Davis caught 24 balls last year with a 13.5 ypc average. I don't know what to expect from the Commanders passing attack this year. It was very efficient last year and I suspect we'll see more of the same depending on RG's health.
