The 49ers will definitely be the more talented team on the field when they play the Raiderson Sunday, but do they have the more talented quarterback?

It depends on who you ask.

Former NFL scout John Middlekauff asked several NFL executives and quarterback coaches who they'd rather have under center going forward: Derek Carr or Colin Kaepernick -- Two players who were both taken 36th overall in the NFL Draft, but three years apart.

Despite the fact that Carr is the quarterback of a 1-10 team, all five people asked by Middlekauff said they'd take Carr.

Carr and Kaepernick have actually put up similar numbers this season, even though they're in two completely different situations.

Kaepernick has a stronger arm and is a better athlete, but the argument for Carr seems to be that he has a higher ceiling.

From Middlekauff: "The consistent sentiment is [Kaepernick] may just be what he is and some of his fundamental flaws will not change (accuracy/touch) over time. Kap's frenetic play is just something his coach and skill guys will have to learn to live with, it may not be something that changed. He will always be a guy that forces you to live with the bad because the good is so special."

Wow, that's pretty wild.

I've always thought Kaepernick was overrated. ESPN tried to push him as the next great thing so hard. He's an athletic guy with a big arm, but that will only get you so far.

Carr is way better than some thought he'd be. he's just a rookie on a crappy team.

Although Kap was for sure overrated, he's not nearly as bad as some are starting to make him out to be. My how the pendulum swings.

Not seeing Carr much, but from what I remember he was shooting up in the draft and many were thinking he would be the best QB coming out, especially because he was already playing in a pro-style offense. Kap runs like a gazelle.. That's really the only thing I'd take as far as Kap is concerned. He just doesn't seem too bright.

Oh yes he is.

He's still a one read passer who can occasionally make the big play with his legs.

Key to 49er offense is Vernon Davis. Opens things up for the passing game. As he goes, so goes their offense. Neither he or Kaep having a good year, not sure why.

I would, too.

Ever since 2012, Kaepernick has not impressed me. He can't beat teams from the pocket and struggles to find receivers. Russell Wilson isn't great at it either, but he has that incredible ability to scramble and pull the rabbit out of his hat. Kaepernick doesn't.

Watching Carr he's got the throwing mechanics and understands the game from years of learning from his brother. He just needs more playing time and better teammates.

Vernon Davis is having a bad year. The reality is that he has had only 4 good seasons(over 50 catches) in his career and two really good years(over 70 catches or over 800 yards). He has only had two seasons with more than 60 catches. His most prolific year he had 78 receptions. As a comparison, Jason Witten averages 77 receptions per season.
