According to NBC’s Peter King and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, NFL officials called teams around the league to gauge interest in signing Michael Sam to their practice squad.

Now Sam and the NFL avoided a nightmare situation when he signed with the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys.”

This report, that is surely to upset other players vying for NFL practice squads around the league, was initially reported by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith on yesterday’s edition of “First Take.”

“According to sources I have in the NFL, the league did call a few teams. They did want teams to take Michael Sam because obviously we see what kind of movement they’re gearing for, and what they’re support of Michael Sam, who we all know, came out, acknowledged he was gay before the draft and ultimately something Roger Goodell and the NFL supports and they want their teams to support. But other teams weren’t too receptive to taking him on once the St. Louis Rams cut him,” reported the ESPN talking head.

“So in steps, Jerry Jones coming to the aid of the NFL and making a splash with his willingness to bring this guy on board to the practice squad.”

...........Now if JJ is such a "dealmaker, he should've put the Salary Cap Penalty back on the table in exchange......

Honestly I support Sam and hope he does well for us, but I gotta say that if I were another player in the NFL looking for a practice squad spot (and I'm not), I would be pretty upset with it.

But maybe it just counteracts the "distraction" that may have caused teams to pass on him.

That's a bold move by the league. After assessing the risk/reward for such a move I'm surprised they took the risk of this news leaking out and possible backlash.

If King and Smith's claims are true, I hope Jerry was able to exact some sort of compensation from the league.

I wonder is SAS would even have a career if the Dallas Cowboys never existed. I mean, 90% of his content revolves around Dallas..........

Two things:

1) - Jerry and Co. is easy prey

2) - Screamin A aint all that bright so its easy for him to do

You know Jerry didnt just do it to do it. At the very least he's got an extra card in his pocket and will pull it out when its beneficial.

The fact that this isn't a national media story, leads me to believe that people finally stopped listening to SAS "football" sources. Cause he doesn't have any. Basketball? that man is on point...football, well...he's there

That's bound to break some kind of NFL rule somewhere. Player's union something.

If they did that for him then other cuts have to ask why not me? It doesn't seem fair or ethical.

Nothing could be proven one way or another on this. The league will say that they know its a big story and they just inquired to see what teams were thinking on him. They'll say they wanted to make sure his, . . . uh, . . . . . . preferences werent a factor in him not being picked up or considered. Just like the Rooney Rule, the league is concerned about its image and doing due diligence. Nothing more, nothing less.

Besides, nobody is gonna touch this with a 10 ft pole. Not worth the backlash or being made an example of. Look at the poor guys who have made comments about those with other preferences. They've had to go to counseling and do community service and forced to make pathetic public apologies. Who wants to deal with that crap?

If this is true, I hope one of the other players sue the league for discrimination. Ridiculous that they are vying for equal treatment and then go out of their way to give special treatment.
