NFL conducts Haynesworth tampering probe

By Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports 9 hours, 2 minutes ago

The NFL has formally opened an investigation into charges by the Tennessee Titans that the Washington Commanders tampered with defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth(notes) before the start of free agency in February, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

The NFL has interviewed at least two people associated with the situation after the Titans complained to the league in April that the Commanders contacted Haynesworth and agent Chad Speck before the start of free agency on Feb. 27.

Haynesworth signed a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Commanders which includes $41 million guaranteed.

If it’s proved that the Commanders contacted Haynesworth too early, the team could lose a draft pick. In the 2008 draft, San Francisco lost a fifth-round pick after the league found that the 49ers had tampered with Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs(notes) during the 2007 season when San Francisco was pondering a trade for Briggs.

As for Haynesworth, the Titans have claimed that their efforts to negotiate with Haynesworth after the 2008 season were hindered by tampering.

Speck and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello declined to comment on the situation.

Don't doubt it. I hope they lose one of their 4 draft picks the next draft.

They should lose one of their draft picks. They tampered with Haynesworth and everyone and their mom knows it.

Dan Snyder=Snake.

I won't ever forget his first game as owner - against us. He was so happy. Until they blew the lead in the fourth quarter and that play to Rocket worked the second time around. Ha ha ha.

I was looking for the one with Smoot on the ground, but this will do.

It'd be nice to see them get nailed for this. Most of these investigations seem to fizzle out.

Wow I was playing little league when that happened. Was watching it at our neighbors house with DirecTV - he was a die hard Skins fan. Play action, and Troy threw a beautiful bomb. Thanks for the reminder.

The punishment should be loss of a first round pick, Haynesworth must sit out the season with pay and the skins still hit with the salary cap hit.

Wait until they see how Big Al performs once he gets paid, they're gonna wish they didn't break the bank for one of those 'contract year' guys.

How pathetic is your franchise when you tamper and still don't turn out a great team?

It's like, what's the use of cheating in a card game if you continue to lose?

That was awesome. I can't remember being more happy. Irvin and him worked so well...

don't teams lose a 1st round pick for tampering usually?

the highest pick ive ever seen a team lose for tampering was a 3rd, dont quote me on that, but 3rd is as high as i think a team got for tampering

Honestly, it really won't matter. These guys can't draft, can't coach and their owner is a Jerry JOnes wannabe, which is not a good thing, but he tries to buy championships vs drafting well, going after a stud QB, etc.

Had they just waited a day or two after free agency to sign him, it would look better. But when you sign a guy at 12:04am on the first day, to a 100 million dollar contract, it stinks to high heaven.
