NFL labor impasse could be broken, Jones says

INDIANAPOLIS – Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Monday that he believes the NFL and the league’s players union might be ready to resolve a stalemate over a new labor agreement.

And some positive signs have emerged to support his optimism.

NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Gene Upshaw, the executive director of the league’s players association, are scheduled to meet today. The NFL management council is scheduled to meet Wednesday and Thursday.

An owners meeting is planned for next Monday in Dallas.

The collective bargaining agreement doesn’t expire until after the 2007 season. If there’s no extension or deal in place by Friday, there will be no salary cap for the 2007 season, which could seriously affect teams' financial planning.

Free agency begins Friday, which is also the first day of the NFL’s calendar year.

“Yes,” Jones said Monday morning when asked if there has been progress. “We feel like we’ll likely have a deal. We’ve got a tight time frame with the (league) year."
