HARD PASS!! Don't tarnish your legacy look at how they treated Zeke
I agree with not tarnishing his legacy, but I don't get the Zeke comparison. Zeke has nowhere near the legacy Emmitt does. And Zeke didn't need to be treated as a star after it was clear he wasn't anymore. Everyone fades. Emmitt didn't even spend his entire career in Dallas.

My favorite player of all time.

But he couldn't coach a middle school team.

I hear ya, but i'm just saying this because they were both star RB's for us, #22 being the best of all time ( I hear that), but they were both stars. Zeke spend a year with the Patriots so he didn't spend his entire career here either. I feel like we all were mad at Zeke for the hold out and getting the money and being a dud, then the organization letting him go, only to bring him back when it was clear he was on the decline

I don't think that was really any mistreatment by the team though. Zeke leaving was just a decision that he wasn't going to be the bell cow for the offense anymore, so they were willing to let him walk rather than pay him like a star. My point about Emmitt not being on the team his whole career was to say that Emmitt wasn't really treated different. The Cowboys felt he was on the decline, and they wouldn't guarantee that he would be the bell cow anymore, so they were willing to let him walk. Emmitt just weathered it better than Zeke because his legacy as one of the best in history was already set in stone.

"You can support a player all day, but at the end of the day, you can't be with him 24 hours a day".

“The percentages for teams that go into score before the first half is pretty high that they wins the game.”

Emmitt Smith quotes from his ESPN days. Sign him up just for the media interviews.

Speaking for me:

If presented with the opportunity to coach the Cowboys...I might consider.

Then: probably decline.

I think there is a role for former players with team pride and super bowl rings. Dallas has lost the DNA of a winner. I'd love to see Jerry and his idiot son find a role for Emmitt and Michael to see if they can instill some passion and pride in wearing the star and being part of a storied franchise.

One thing I've always wondered is how many star players actually pan out as coaches. Wayne Gretzky was the GOAT of hockey as a player, but supposedly when he was the Head coach of the Coyotes he saw the game the way he did as an elite player but couldn't communicate properly to his players.
Like with Emmitt, he was the GOAT RB, he knew how to anticipate seeing the hole before it opened, knew how to pace himself to wait, etc...
Can he properly teach players how to read blocking or is something that he knows how to see himself but explaining it to a player is difficult?

Just seems like most coaches are former ok or backup players who may not of been special or had that sixth sense on the field that made them elite.
I don't think its great players can't be great coaches I just think its just a numbers thing. Andy Reid isn't a great coach because he wasn't a great football player. He's just a great coach. There's not many great players that go into coaching. If there were more I think we'd see more of them being solid.

Its tough because the type of culture Emmitt and those guys had doesn't translate to this 2024 team. Michael talks to those guys and it just goes one ear and out the other. Its something bigger going on then these ex players can handle. Even Deion and his somewhat success in college. Its very similar to what we have now in Dallas. He even had to adjust.

Tom Landry - played at UT in college. A good not great college player. Played for the ny giants for less than decade and was a decent great DB and a good punter. But he was identified early as a great coach.
