NFL Considers 17th Regular Season Game

NFL officials are considering adding a 17th regular season game to accommodate the league's desire to play overseas games, Commissioner Roger Goodell said yesterday, although the idea is in the formative stages.

Goodell and other league officials had not even discussed the possibility with the leaders of the NFL Players Association as of yesterday. But if the NFL decides to increase the number of regular season games it will play in foreign countries beyond the one to two per year to which owners now are committed, it could decide to add a week to the regular season to devote to a slate of overseas games while subtracting a week from the preseason.

Never really understood the need for a bye week now there is an even number of teams in the NFL. However if this means i get to see more NFL live then I am all for it.

Most importantly salaries will have to go up and so will the cap. That will be the players issue, you want more games, pay more money.

I seriously think it is a bad Idea. Players are banged up and injured enough already, there is nothing wrong with 16 games, that one more game will help.

Nfl owners are the greediest people on the planet, they have everything and they still want more. Why the hell do they have to appeal to other countries? Who cares. I am sure people in london couldnt give a crap if the rams and cardinals play a game there...

we dont need 17 regular season games whether they cut back the preseason or not...

the worst thing the NFL can do is have playoff football on and teams having to run 2nd and 3rd teamers out there because half their starters are gone for the yr...

somebody might say cutting the preseason back takes care of that, but it really doesnt...if there are only 2 preseason games the starters will see the majority of time in those games, rather than only playing a few series or a half in 3 of 4 games...

i'm fine with 17 RS games.

however, to do this without expanding rosters is a mistake, IMHO.

There is still a whole world out there that the NFL hasn’t reached. There is a ton of money to be made overseas by the owners and players. I can see this happening. I don’t have a problem with it, we have the best game in the world and we should share.

I'd like to see the bye week handled so that all teams can benefit. Why can't half the teams have a bye one week and the other half the next week. There's still be at least 6 games on Sunday & 1 game on MNF.

I do think preseason games could be cut back to 3 with the vets playing 1/4 of the first game and most of the 3rd game. The remainder of the time would be for drafted/undrafted, FA signings and others to learn the system and show their skill.

I do think an overseas game (except in Mexico or Canada) places additional physical strains on players give the distances they must fly, etc. Most times there is a 3 day jet lag on each leg of the flight.

When they went from 14 games to 16 games, they did not make them obsolete. so why would it now.
I think the Dolphins are behind this one. They fear their record will be broken soon.:laugh1:
Maybe by Dallas in the next few years.

In CFL they play 18 regular season games and 2 preseason.

The only way it would work is if the teams playing over seas had a bye the following week...
