Amid complaints that Thursday games force players who are banged up to hit the field without enough time to recover from their games on the Sunday before, the NFL is considering a change: Allow 49, not 46, players to suit up on Thursdays.

The proposal (which is technically a bylaw change, not a rule change) would raise the number of active players for games on any day other than Sunday or Monday, other than in Week One. So that would include the Thursday games in Weeks 2-16, the two Saturday games planned for Week 16 this season, and any other game that happens to fall on a day other than Sunday or Monday for whatever scheduling reason.

This rule probably wouldn’t change the fact that players aren’t crazy about playing on Thursdays. But it might be a small step toward keeping players fresher when they’re coming off a short work week. It’s a rule the owners should pass.
lol.

Shouldn't the goal be in keeping a significant number of the gameday roster fresher? How will three extra players, who might contribute in Thursday night games, accomplish that?

Lol. Roger "Moar" Goodell at it again.
LOL at you thinking this is Goodell and not the owners. Amazing you have not yet figured out that Goodell does not wipe his rear end without consulting the owners first.

With that logic it's not Jerry's fault with the Cowboys, then.

I simply don't understand why if there is a 53 man roster, you don't have 53 men active. Never have.

They want each team to enter the game with the same number of players suited up. They don't want one team to suit up 53 while the other can only suit up 46 due to injuries.

Still not a good enough reason to me. Most teams usually only have 2 or 3 guys that can't go at all that week. Pee-wee teams have bigger rosters. If they are serious about safety they should expand the game day roster to the full 60 guys on the roster and practice squad. I would even add a 5-7 man taxi squad just for Special Teamers. They wouldn't have to have full union benefits and maybe they would allow Kickoffs to stay a part of the game.

Why not just allow 49 for every game every week? Give each team a better opportunity to put a better product on the field.

A full 53 man roster should be used every game. Why have 53 if 53 players are not allowed to play? It has never made sense to me. I am sure that there is some totally stupid reason for it though.

Injuries are part of the game. It would work out in the long run. I don't see having one or two more players suited up as s big advantage . Only a certain number can be on the field anyway.

I guess being able to sit your 3 most banged up players could be relief but aren't teams already activating practice squad players to do the same thing? Not sure how having 3 extra people on a banged up team would help. Is this even a real proposal. Dirt stick box.

I would love to see the 53 man roster size increase.

This is simply impossible...Cowboys always had an advantage by getting the Thanksgiving game.....misprint!

Funny how "they" never mentioned Detroit.
