10 things that changed the game

10. K Pete Gogolak revolutionized nfl kicker because he was a soccer style kicker. In the past, kickers were linemen... sideways kicker vs straight out

9. Bill Walsh West Coast Offense

8. NFL Films

7. Rule changes of 1978 - Defenses were dominating the game, so chnges were made to make it more exciting for fans by opening up the passing game.

-Limit the amount of contact between DB and receivers (aka 5-yd chuck rule)
-Better pass protection for QBs - hands open/close should be inside blocker elbows.

6. Astroturf - made the game faster. changed the way the search for speed the #1 priority. Also the rise in injuries. Better science made the astro turf extinct.

5. Instant replay

4. Paul Brown - Cleveland Browns, Radio receiver in the QB helmet, Draw play, put teaching into the coaching, brought integration into football

3. free agency

2. Television - Pete Rozelle divised the idea of revenue sharing to make the game more television-friendly. Creation of MNF. First pre-game show

1. AFL-NFL War

Honorable Mention
Lawrence Taylor
Fantasy football

What? No Tex Schramm in the Top 10? The man revolutionized the game and the league in many many ways.

Allowing juniors to declare was a pretty radical step, though probably didn't impact the game that much.

7. Rule changes of 1978

As head of the league's competition committee, Schramm was one of the main architects behind these rule changes.

5. Instant replay

Schramm has been called the "father of instant replay."

2. Television

It was Schramm's idea to give the ref a microphone, have games on Thanksgiving, put the official game clock on the scoreboard, have tie games go to overtime, and put the arrows next to the yardline markers to give viewers a better idea of what part of the field the action was on.

1. AFL-NFL War

The ultimate effect of which was the merger. Schramm and Lamar Hunt were the two people who were most responsible for making the merger happen.

If everybody listed his favorite Schramm innovation in a post, the thread would go three pages. Probably more than anyone else, Schramm made the NFL what it is today.

That's a great post, percy.

Tex doesn't get much recognition today, but his influence lives on.

(He wasn't a saint, of course, but he did have a number of fine ideas).

No Landry, no Bob Hayes? Bleh. At least there's a kicker mentioned, no need to bring up the inspiration for zone defenses.

A mention would have been nice.

Also Gale Sayers was making a point of wanting the hashmarks being moved in the top 10.

What about moving the field goal posts, to the back of the endzone?

I don't know if that deserves a top 10 but it had a big effect on field goals obviously, plus there was no longer a big pole in the middle of the field you had to avoid.

How about Landry's multiple offensive formations he brought to the league in the 1960's? Or Bud Grant's development of the zone defense? Or Landry bringing back the Shotgun formation in the 1970's?

Or Tom Landry or Bob Hayes. How about Deacon Jones and his head slap.

Argh.

I could go into some other ones, although I kind of expect them to be forgotten, but I would think Bob Hayes would be on the list. Not to mention Landry's defenses, whom were the first to make pre-snap reads on the offense.

With Hayes, they got a receiver who was responsible for the creatiion of the zone defense along with before him teams almost always put the fastest player on the team at tailback. After Hayes, teams started to put their fastest player at wide receiver. Plus, it gave an avenue for those fast, track star guys who were considered too small to play tailback.
