Last night after the game the NFL's Network's Timeline show: The Dallas Cowboys Are The Only America's Team aired and it was excellent.

Just when you think you've seen everything about the Cowboys from the 70's NFL Films gives us more stuff that was very well done.

To give you some highlights--

It explains how one guy at the NFL Network who was just an editor looking for a name to that year's team highlight reel called us American's Team and the name just took off. The show follows him and the effect (good and bad) it has had on him.

It explored American society at the time and talked about American heroes were Cowboys (John Wayne) for the 70's generation of parents and how the name was perfect. We were almost called the Dallas Steers. Can you imagine that?

It showed why Landry was the perfect man to embody the virtues of American Values at the time. He was a WW II bomber pilot (when those missions were virtually suicide runs without fighter support over Germany) and conducted 29 missions.

It showed why Roger Staubach cemented the name with his character and play. There are some great highlights of his scrambling and (some plays will remind you of Romo). Roger was phenomenal.

And finally - the cheerleaders and their effect on the American culture in the 70's. They were everywhere. For instance, did you know they had their own TV Movie of the Week that was the highest rated show on television that year?

I know we talk about how the ratings and turnouts at away games are impressive and makes us America's Team but to see the roots and how it evolved is fascinating and it all makes sense.

Believe it or not, I think we were even bigger in the 70's because people's interests weren't so diverse. As the show says, everybody knew every player at every position and this was before the true age of information. It was more saturation. You would not have needed satellite TV back then because you always got the Cowboys at 4:00. It shows President talking about the Cowboys including President Ford at a press conference saying, "Did you see that pass from Roger Staubach to Drew Pearson yesterday?"

Perhaps one of the best things is it mocks other teams attempts to call themselves America's Team (Stealers, Packers, Patriots). It was really well done and if you get a chance to see it please do.

Remember in the 80's when the Atlanta Braves tried calling themselves America's Team because every game was shown on TBS back in the early days of cable?

Pressed the record button, then turned off the tv. I plan on watching it tomorrow. :)
