NFL teams whose players contract swine flu will be eligible for emergency help that allows them to bring new players onto their active roster, according to a report from John Clayton of ESPN.
Commissioner Roger Goodell reportedly contacted teams on Friday and let them know that if they have at least six proven cases of the H1N1 virus, they will be allowed to promote six players from their practice squad to maintain a roster capable of playing that week's games. The moves could come as late as four hours before kickoff and would be in the form of roster exemptions. Per Clayton, the rule is in place immediately.
Clayton reports that the maximum number of exemptions in a given week is eight, but it isn't clear from his report if players would need to clear waivers before being placed back on the practice squad.
Texans tight end Anthony Hill was diagnosed with swine flu this week and is currently the only player known to be missing this week's games because of the illness.
