NFL owners learning to trust DeMaurice Smith

6/23/2011 1:25:12 PM

The talk for four months now has been about the inherent lack of trust between the owners and the the players. According to Albert Breer of NFL Network, that bridge has been gapped largely by focusing on revenue in the new CBA.

Also, a source close to the negotiations has told Breer that NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith has earned the owners' trust and respect in a very big way over the last month. In fact, that part of the equation, coinciding with the legal aspects of the dispute slowing and the lawyers taking much smaller roles, has been integral in getting the owners to move off hard-line stances and listen to players' demands.

One NFC team executive said, after this week's owners meetings, the owners and players are "within striking distance" of a deal. The two sides have spent the last month negotiating the revenue split -- by far the biggest issue on the table. On Thursday, the meetings will reach another critical juncture, as the sides go in depth into the rookie system for the first time since starting the "secret" meetings in Chicago on May 31.

According to another player source, the NFLPA held a conference call for players in the lunchtime hour on Thursday to update the reps, much like owners were given an update earlier this week.

The logic of transition has again returned to the media as well. They again grasp a settlement that now can be achieved. It took a process for it to reach their collective eye, and then be given to us 'common' fans.

Thanks for such a positive and direction filled post, Hos.

I didn't even have to insult another poster for the sake of the NFL or the players for that view.:starspin

Now if terrorists and criminal elements will leave things alone long enough for the rest of us to rebuild world directions, this football season will be great...eventually.:starspin

Lol, long haired freekie people need not apply....so I put up my hair underneath my hat, and went in to see why.

Signs, signs, everywhere's a sign, do this, don't do that; can't you read the signs.

Its only good news when you don't hate the ones involved.
I have no idea what this is supposed to mean.

Thread was started 3 hours ago with a positive message. One started an hour ago with a negative message already has more hits and responses.

A tear on this one, Hos...
An injured Veteran was a victim to his house fire. His pet dog made it out alive, and turned around to reenter that fire, to be with his Master.

And that is a real tear of mine. As it just aired here.

The reason that there are not more responses is that the people who did not vilify Smith in the first place do not have the need to go into "told you so" mode.

Unlike the D Smith is teh debil people who jumped on every minute detail to say "see I was right".

It really goes to show you who had an agenda in all of this :)

Maybe, there should be an included description of who these Smith is all wrong peoples, to contrast for your own sight. As steps and directions as they occured, were usually referenced, and not just a crusade of all right and wrong. Excepted where disagreement on specific actions was an element that was validly questioned and discussed. Not everyone joined up in the selection of sides, and then then playing of a game. There was objectiveness involved, even if some of those same participants preferred to chose a side.

But if one's choice for vindication involves choosing sides for a contest. Well, it appears that that contest is drawing to a close. And both of the previously designated sides, will shortly be a team once again. Now, where would that put those same side followers?

Glad to hear it and can't wait for the deal to get done but frankly he's still just as dirty as the greedy owners and players who were only looking out for themselves.

??? Not sure if I understand this... He has a job to do and is doing it well up until this point actually.

That's fine. I'm not going to get into one of these back and forth, heated debates, over rather he's been a stand up guy, just doing his job, blah blah blah that has been all over these forums for the last few months.

I feel this whole process that has been dragging on, and continuing to, is as much his fault as it is the owners and anyone else. I'll give equal blame to all and that's all I'm going to say about the subject.

Thanks for posting that. In some ways that is the most encouraging news to come out so far.

Who knows, maybe Smith telling his own lawyers to stand down in front of the owners was a great thing to have happen.

Been struck the last few days of how irritable some posters have become on this strike issue, presumably cause they fear losing the NFL season. I thought, well, when it's over, we'll all be on the same team again. The irritations will pass.

Then I was reminded that irritably is actually present no matter the subject, in-season, off-season, winning or losing, it really doesn't matter.

I'm hopeful we'll have a deal soon, FA rules & timetable, and then TC's. Til then, I'm not really into hanging on every word about these negotiations.

But I understand some are. That's cool.

Who is villifying him in this thread?

I feel that there was a ton of wasted time because of smith's dismantling of the union. If this had not happened, there may not have been a lockout. I'm not saying there would be a deal by now. But it was obvious the way it went down, Smith had no intention of negotiating. It wasn't until the court allowed the lockout that Smith was willing to negotiate. Do I know that there wouldn't have been a lockout. No, not for sure. But I do know after the union decertified, the owners had no choice.

If there was no lockout, we would have had mini camps and and had our players in for conditioning and rehab. We may even have been operating under last years rules. So yes, I feel Smith hurt more than helped this process.
