New York -- The expanded definition of the horse collar tackle today leaves open the possibility for further expansions in the future. The horse collar tackle was responsible for four serious injuries during the 2004 season, and with several injuries to key NFL stars this past season like Drew Brees, Daunte Culpepper, Donovan McNabb, and Carson Palmer, the NFL is anxious to protect its best players.

One possible solution, which the NFL will consider in meetings next year, would be the complete abolition of gameplay tackles. One NFL expert estimated that 95% of all injuries this past year were the direct result of tackles during the game.

The NFL will also consider the possibility of eliminating training camp and preseason games.

On a related note, after recently passing the resolution to more strictly enforce touchdown celebrations, the NFL may next year add a ban on field goal celebrations as well, lest we forget Bill Gramatica. In the opinion of one player, kickers shouldn't be celebrating anyway. "They should just get back to the sidelines where they belong," said Larry Allen.
