The Dallas Cowboys will cut the ribbon on their brand-new, billion-dollar stadium on Friday night, when the team continues its preseason with a matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
Cowboys Stadium, the team's retractable-roof facility built at a reported price tag of $1.15 billion, has hosted other events including concerts and soccer matches, but will be put to its main use - NFL football - for the first time on Friday.
Whether the team's play on the field matches the world-class ambience of the new facility remains to be seen.
Dallas did not look particularly sharp in its preseason opener, a 31-10 loss at the Oakland Raiders last Thursday, though the team's first-team offense did manage to put some points on the board.
Quarterback Tony Romo was 4-of-6 for 36 yards before exiting, connecting with trusty tight end Jason Witten for an eight-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter.
Romo and the first-string should see more extensive time against the Titans, before backup QBs Jon Kitna (7-of-10, 87 yards, 1 INT against Oakland) and Stephen McGee (4-of-9, 34 yards) take their turns.
No. 1 receiver Roy Williams is expected to be in the lineup against the Titans despite suffering a sprained wrist in practice earlier this week. Williams had one catch for 12 yards versus Tennessee.
Elsewhere on the injury front for Dallas, cornerbacks Terence Newman (groin) and Mike Jenkins (ankle) are both slated to play on Friday after missing the Oakland game.
Though the Cowboys and their new digs will be the story on Friday, the contest will also give the Tennessee Titans a chance to build on a promising 2-0 start to the preseason.
After downing the Buffalo Bills in the Hall of Fame Game, the Titans were 27-20 winners over the Buccaneers last Saturday, a tilt that brought with it several positive signs.
First-round draft choice and wide receiver Kenny Britt (Rutgers) made his first appearance in a Tennessee uniform, hauling in five passes for a game- high 89 yards.
And, after a shaky outing against Buffalo, quarterback Vince Young was a crisp 9-of-14 for 131 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown pass to Britt, and actually outplayed starter Kerry Collins (4-of-9, 37 yards, 2 INT).
Young is expected to see more time with the first-team on Friday night.
Among the injured for Tennessee are tackle David Stewart (knee) and defensive tackle Jason Jones (foot), neither of whom are expected to play against the Cowboys.
Dallas holds a 20-13 edge in the preseason series, including a 20-17 home victory in the last such matchup, prior to the 2004 season. The bulk of the preseason meetings between the clubs occurred prior to 1997, when what is now the Titans franchise resided in Houston.
