I tell them I'm gonna leave if I don't get it for free :)

$99 definitely isn't bad, either, SD, for the peace of mind knowing you won't miss a game.

I got it for free this year.

Online chat worked for me.

Many of the reasons tv ratings are down are pointed out here. But, because of the trends/facts mentioned, tv ratings are becoming an irrelevant measure of sports and programming momentum and performance. A more meaningful measure is total audience across all channels or total revenue derived directly from game viewership.

Proportionally, is revenue derived directly from in-game advertising, subscriptions or partnerships going up or down? I suspect it's rising.

Don't fall into the trap...enter the new era.

I was going to cut the cord this year. But DirecTV talked me into another year... I pay $13 a month and got Sunday Ticket for 99....

Who else is tired of the number of stupid penalties in a game? I really hate seeing an awesome drive get side tracked because a lineman farted and got called for a false start. :(

a lot of it is that the games are almost unwatchable only about six or so teams are in the race to go to the superbowl we see the officials to much and their calls are really bad like in Washington last week and the nfl is trying to become cops but mostly its that their product is really bad any more

Too much off the field drama and too little on the field action. The catch rule has turned memorable plays into incomplete passes. And while it is no doubt necessary, a lot of the violent action has been legislated out of the game.

IF sunday Ticket and the like wanted to make money and would at least drive up overall viewership. Offer team packages at a discounted price. I would pay $99 a year if i knew I could catch every Cowboys game, I do not watch that much of other teams.

A few half-baked theories I'd throw out for consideration:

1. Society has developed attention deficit issues that are not conducive to watching a 3-hour spectacle that includes only 13 minutes or so of snap-to-whistle action. We need our news in bite-sized morsels, tweets instead of articles (whose got the time to read them?) but we're going to sit down to watch a game in which more time elapses between plays than during the plays themselves? Yeah right.

2. The NFL has cannibalized its own product. Red Zone, while the perfect product offering for today's attention deficit society, makes watching the games themselves unnecessary. Why sit through all the "boring stuff" when you can basically watch a real-time highlight show that captures every ongoing game.

3. The league faces serious piracy issues. How many people stream games instead of paying for Sunday Ticket?

BANG! All three hit it!

the backbone of the league is 70's cowboys, steelers, and raiders fans.

i dont get the sense that millenials and especially generation z love this game and sports in general as much as them.

also injuries, cap restrictions, and bad pr have turned off a lot of fans to the nfl. it's tough to get emotionally invested in a team when you know a premium player could blow out a knee any second, teams can't stay together for a long time b/c of the cap, and the commish is constantly putting a negative light on the players.

The NBA knew it had a problem with the perception of bad behavior among its players and worked to counter it. Goodell seems bound and determined to create such a perception about NFL players.

Still trips me out how it's the most popular sport in the world. I mean it's cool to play when you're like 8 that's about it.
More and more American kids are playing soccer and not football because of the injury stigma

They don't grow up to be hardcore NFL fans for the most part

Think about all the cost that goes into playing American football, now think of soccer... so what sport are 2nd and 3rd world countries going to play?

The ironic thing is that in the US the poorer districts will be the last ones to give up on football because it still seen as a way out

I think the biggest factor is the game isn't that interesting. Many are simply bad.

Game after game last weekend were just not entertaining.

Last night's game was a dreg.

Folks like scoring & close games and we're getting neither.

I will disagree....

Fans like myself want to know that games are not being officiated to keep it close. The NFL has lost all integrity in my book. Sure the fans want to see close games....but after a while...game after game after game every single weekend....Something isn't right.

The league has become so scripted....as a fan that has closely followed the game....I know when the fix is in....and oh baby.. this thing is made for the fan that is just dumb enough to pony up hundreds if not more to get their fix.

Ratings are estimate's based on small
group monitored by Nielsen.
The only important rating is for free network TV games.
They don't know what people really watch, just what the estimates say.
So this just means fewer Nielsen viewers are watching.
That small group could be affected by
many things.
The player anthem protest's ,players in trouble, could be a turnoff to this group.

I absolutely believe it's number 4. From my own experiences, young people have a variety of interest, and sports just aren't as important to them as it use to be. That's not to say a lot of younger people don't like sports or won't care about them in the future, but it's noticeable.
