Just a dumb question on one of the NFL's rules. I'll use the Ravens/Patriots game as an example.

With the Ravens down in the fourth quarter. Is it a legal play to throw a pass down the middle of the field and a receiver upon making the catch turn around and lateral the ball out of bounds? If not what is the penalty. Thanks.

I think it's just a fumble and the clock continues to run...

Late in a game, with no timeouts, a receiver catches the ball, gets a few yards upfield, but realizes he can't get out of bounds before being tackled. Can he purposefully fumble the ball out of bounds to stop the clock? Thanks! -- Hank Jones, Joliet

A team is not permitted to conserve time inside of one minute of either half by throwing a backward pass out-of-bounds or by throwing an illegal forward pass in order to stop the clock. For illegally conserving time, the penalty is loss of five yards and a ten-second runoff of the clock will be administered by the referee under certain circumstances. In short, the answer to your question is, "No."

You know that is interesting though. Usually it takes more then 10 seconds to line up and spike the ball, sometimes it might be worth it for 5 yards and 10 seconds. If you got 30 seonds left they ususally leave the middle of the field more open. Why not take a shot down the middle and chuck the ball out of bounds? LOL that would be funny.

I wonder what they mean by certain circumstances....

Because the penalty and 10-second run off depends on if the patriots are playing or not.

I didn't see the game but thought it fit too well.

Not that they needed yet another penalty on that play, but when the pass was knocked away in the end zone on 4th down but there was a flag on the play giving the Patriots a 1st & goal, Ed Reed took his helmet off but no flag was thrown for it.

I see players do this all the time yet only rarely do I see them get flagged for it, unless they are Cowboys of course. The problem with the officiating is that it is so inconsistent.

Easy....Any team not named the *Patriots will get a ten second run off.

Not a dumb question at all. I've wondered that same thing many times. Now I know the answer...thanks!

Only way this would work is if you had someone standing near the sideline. He could catch it and step out. No penalty.

why did new England get the penalty and the play late in the game? They got a 5yd illegal contact penalty and still got the results of the play (a QB scramble I think)...the ref even said "added to the end of the run"...when did that become a penalty that was both and not either the penalty or play option?

Lateral it out of bounds from the middle of the field?

I was curious about that myself.

Same here. My understanding is it's either/or, not both.

If it really is both, then it needs to be changed.
