Panthers LB Julius Peppers has a cap figure of nearly $15 million, but his roster spot is safe. The team is likely to restructure or extend his contract to reduce his cap figure.

Despite "tagging" Dwight Freeney, Colts president Bill Polian's hope is to sign the three-time Pro Bowl defensive end to a long-term contract. Polian and Gary Wichard, Freeney's agent, spoke at length Monday. "We'll continue to talk with the idea toward putting together a long-term deal,'' Polian said, calling Freeney "an integral part of this team."

Unrestricted free agency can’t come soon enough for running back Chris Brown, who fell out of favor with the Titans and to third on the depth chart behind Travis Henry and LenDale White last season. Brown, a two-year starter and former 1,000-yard rusher in 2004, is about to gain his freedom, and his agent says Brown is excited. “We’re preparing Chris for free agency, and we’re looking forward to it,” Ryan Morgan said. ... At the time, there was speculation that the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and Denver Broncos might possibly be good fits for Brown. “Those were some of the teams that we felt might be a good fit at the time, but we’ll reassess the situation and we’re exploring what our best options might be once free agency begins,” Morgan said.

Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney plans to void the remaining two years of his contract — he's owed $13.8 million — next week, making him an unrestricted free agent, according to his co-representative, Rich Rosa. Beginning today, Kerney has a week to opt out of his deal, which he is expected to do, although he probably won't rush. According to Rosa, he wants to work out a new deal with the Falcons. If Kerney voids his contract after Thursday, the Falcons would not be able to stop him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s web site, Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones is being sought by Las Vegas police who want to speak to him about a triple shooting at the Minxx Gentleman’s Club. The story credited “an NFL source” with the information. According to the story, sources said Jones was with a number of celebrities, including rapper Nelly and music producer Jermaine Dupri, who is singer Janet Jackson’s boyfriend, at the strip club for a private event named Harlem Knights, when the shooting allegedly took place around 5 a.m. local time. The NBA All-Star Weekend was held in Las Vegas, bringing a number of additional celebrities to the city. The story went on to say that Steve Cofield, a Las Vegas sports talk show host, reported that Jones was with a group that opened fire after leaving the club. It was reported that two security guards were among the three people injured.

The Colts toughest decision this offseason might involve Cato June. He led the team with 162 tackles in '06 after being voted to his first Pro Bowl the previous season. The Colts will want him back -- if the price is right. "The key thing is what the market will bear,'' Polian said. "There is a price for everybody we feel we can afford and we can actually live with under the cap. "There is a number beyond which we can't go for any player.''

49ers coach Mike Nolan also has indicated he will consider candidates outside the organization. One possibility could be Cincinnati quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese. The 49ers would need to get permission from the Bengals to interview Zampese, whose father, Ernie, was a former NFL offensive coordinator and an early mentor of Turner.

Dolphins coach Cam Cameron doesn't simply want to show the proper respect to Dolphins legend Dan Marino. He wants to cultivate a relationship, too. ''He's stopped by the office. We've been together several times already,'' Cameron said Monday at the dinner/auction that is annually held on the eve of Marino's charity golf tournament. ``He'll have interesting input that I'm looking forward to. I'm looking forward to building on this relationship.'' Cameron -- noting he has ''a tremendous amount of respect not only what [Marino] did as a Miami Dolphin but his knowledge of the National Football League'' -- declined to discuss Daunte Culpepper's status or any other team issues Monday because he did not want to deflect attention from Marino.

The Steelers have a star-studded lineup of players entering the final year of their contracts in 2007. They will try to negotiate extensions with many, but history shows they can't sign them all. Among the starters headed into the final year of their contracts are four current or former Pro Bowl players -- guard Alan Faneca, safety Troy Polamalu, linebacker Joey Porter and defensive end Aaron Smith. Other starters working on their final contract year are guard Kendall Simmons, linebacker Clark Haggans and fullback Dan Kreider.

Business or not, Ron Rivera's parting with the Bears was not his choice. Asked if he wished he were staying, Rivera was unequivocal: "Absolutely. Any opportunity to stay here in Chicago would have been tremendous. This is a team that's given me every opportunity I've gotten in football to begin with and it's a great organization." Both Rivera and Lovie Smith said the problems were not with philosophy or performance. Rivera said he was not quite sure how to explain the differences that led to his contract not being renewed. He simply said Smith had decided to shuffle his staff, "and we'll go from there," using one of Smith's pet phrases.

Even as coach Mike Nolan commenced the search for his replacement, he reiterated through a team spokesman that he intends to retain the system that Norv Turner installed when he joined the 49ers little more than a year ago. That would spare quarterback Alex Smith and the rest of the offense from having to learn a new scheme after showing significant progress in Turner's lone season as the 49ers' coordinator. Still, the loss of Turner dealt a blow to the continuity the 49ers strived for in hopes it would translate to even greater strides next season for Smith, whose passer rating nearly doubled to 74.8 last season after a disastrous rookie campaign. Nolan's search for Turner's replacement will include gathering input from his players and consideration of all five offensive assistants remaining on the 49ers staff. Wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan is the only one among them with previous experience as an NFL offensive coordinator, having served in that role in Arizona in 2003. Quarterbacks coach Jim Hostler and tight ends coach Pete Hoener each served as an offensive coordinator while coaching in the college ranks. Offensive line coach George Warhop spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator in NFL Europe for the London Monarchs. Running backs coach Bishop Harris is a past head coach at North Carolina Central (1991-92).

The Bengals, stung by nine player arrests in the past 14 months, also will make player character a higher priority in 2007, club president Mike Brown told The Enquirer in an exclusive interview. Still, when asked about Brown's comments regarding the importance of character, Marvin Lewis said: "It's always been. You can't control what happens." The Bengals will put great effort into finding players who can contribute immediately.

The Dolphins have a new quarterbacks coach. In a few days, they could have a new offensive coordinator, too. Terry Shea, who helped developed Trent Green in Kansas City and more recently has worked with coveted draft prospect Brady Quinn, was hired Monday as Miami's new quarterbacks coach. With that position filled, Dolphins coach Cam Cameron likely will act quickly to hire a coordinator. San Diego's Clarence Shelmon might be the top candidate if he is not retained by new Chargers coach Norv Turner.

The Panthers began working to get under the NFL's salary cap Monday, releasing veteran defensive end Al Wallace. Carolina's third defensive end since 2002, Wallace had been scheduled to count $1.9 million against the $109 million cap, which the Panthers have to be under by March 2. His release frees up $1.1 million and leaves the Panthers about $1.4 million over the cap. They probably will do most of their remaining cap juggling by restructuring contracts.
