It sounds like one team rumored to be very interested in signing Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander is not so big on the idea. That team would be the Arizona Cardinals. They have plenty of room under the salary cap to do some things in free agency and were put into the mix for Alexander because of their cap space and their struggles with a running game last season. Comments from Arizona coach Dennis Green and Rod Graves, vice president of football operations, at the NFL combine indicate the Cardinals aren't too willing to make the big splash.

Adam Vinatieri was a hot topic at the scouting combine yesterday, with buzz centering on an unlikely potential suitor - the Green Bay Packers. Currently in negotiations with their own free agent kicker, Ryan Longwell, the Pack are rumored to be considering letting Longwell walk and making a run at Vinatieri, perhaps the best cold-weather kicker in history. Patriots spokesman Stacey James refused to confirm whether the Patriots are meeting with Vinatieri’s agent, Jonathan Hurst, citing club policy not to discuss ongoing negotiations. Hurst did not return calls. If the Patriots fail to sign him by Friday, he’s expected to have no shortage of suitors. The Dallas Cowboys could be in the mix, particularly since head coach Bill Parcells gave Vinatieri his start in 1996.

If the Washington Commanders are able to rework enough contracts and cut enough players to get under the projected salary cap of $95 million by Thursday and then free up some more cash to sign a new player, Pittsburgh receiver Antwaan Randle El could be on their radar. Randle El is expected to be pursued by Chicago and Philadelphia. Pittsburgh would like to keep Randle El but not at the kind of price he will command on the open market.

Texans GM Charley Casserly is openly shopping the top pick, which the Jets would use on Chad Pennington's successor. The Jets are logical partners, because disgruntled defensive end John Abraham would have great appeal to the Texans, who are desperate for a pass rush. In addition, the Texans have a crying need to protect their recently re-signed QB, David Carr, and can grab blue-chip left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson at No. 4 should they swap picks with the Jets.
____________________________________________

The likelihood Chris Simms will sign a one-year restricted free-agent tender of $2-million has increased significantly. Such an offer would require any suitor to compensate the Bucs with a first- and third-round draft pick. It seems a long-term deal may be a long way off. "There's nothing new right now," Condon said Sunday. "We're still talking."
____________________________________________

The Green Bay Packers have the ability to more than satisfy defensive end Aaron Kampman's financial demands, but the estimation of some National Football League observers is that unless they complete a deal with him before the start of free agency Friday, he'll be playing somewhere else next season. If Kampman makes it to free agency, he will be one of the top ends available and stands to receive around $5 million a year on a long-term deal.
____________________________________________

President Matt Millen wants to meet with defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson before any decision is made on Wilkinson's future with the Lions. Wilkinson, who turns 33 in two weeks, has played 12 NFL seasons and started all 48 games since signing with the Lions as a free agent in 2003. There is some question about where Wilkinson will fit in coach Rod Marinelli's system. Wilkinson lives in the Washington, D.C., area. "I'm going to go see Dan," Millen said. "I really like him. He's one of my favorites. He's a good man."
____________________________________________

While Vince Young's Wonderlic tests created a huge controversy, he was busy interviewing with different teams, including the Texans. "I thought the interview went well," Young said. "I thought coach (Gary) Kubiak was cool. "They asked me a lot of questions about offense. At the end, they asked me why I thought I'd be good for the team. I basically told them that I'm a high-character guy that wants to win. I said it's important to be a leader. "I told them I wanted a chance to lead them to a Super Bowl win."
____________________________________________

With the NFL staring into an abyss of labor discord that it hasn't faced in more than a decade, representatives of the league's players and team owners are prepared to resume negotiations aimed at producing a last-minute settlement that would keep the league's salary cap system in place beyond next season. However, there are widely disparate views on whether the last-ditch talks have much of a chance for success. NFL Players Association Executive Director Gene Upshaw has said repeatedly over the past 10 days that he is not optimistic that he can agree with the owners to an extension of the collective bargaining agreement before Friday, when the free agent market is scheduled to open.
____________________________________________

The Browns are expected to announce today the signing of one of two players who would otherwise become free agents Friday -- either defensive end Orpheus Roye or left tackle L.J. Shelton.
____________________________________________

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on La'Roi Glover's future: "The timing hasn't been where we had to address it. With the quality of player La'Roi is and the job he's done for us, the job of sitting down with him or him sitting down with us and seeing how fits, it was going to be so difficult that we put it off till a better day, to be realistic about it."
____________________________________________

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on the decision to extend Bill Parcells' contract: "The alternative to that wasn't even close as far as us having a chance to win and win big in the immediate future. Not even close. And I have placed a big priority on winning in the immediate, like this year, next year and maybe beyond."
____________________________________________

Bears coach Lovie Smith gave what has become his stock answer when asked at the NFL combine if he has been offered a contract extension. Smith said he loves his job, doesn't aspire to another one and feels good about the contract he's working under. "Hopefully, in time, I'll do something to warrant getting a long-term extension,'' Smith said. Just how much time appears to be something of a problem. Agent Frank Bauer said Sunday that he has had a couple of brief conversations with Bears president and CEO Ted Phillips about an extension for Smith -- who has two years left on a four-year deal that reportedly pays him about $1.4 million a year -- but Bauer described the preliminary talks as "at a stalemate.''
____________________________________________

Southern California's Matt Leinart scored 35 on the Wonderlic test Friday, according to sources. The other top quarterback in the upcoming draft, Vanderbilt's Jay Cutler, had 26 in April. Almost all of the quarterbacks taken in the first round in the last decade scored 20 or more. The average score by 26 quarterbacks who took the test last spring was 23.35.
____________________________________________

Jets QB Chad Pennington broke his silence and sounded ready to fight for his job, assuming he still has one. "My arm and shoulder are fine," Pennington was quoted as saying in yesterday's Sarasota Herald Tribune. "I'm anxious to get started." Pennington, who has been rehabbing his second rotator cuff injury at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, was fishing. He will be fishing for a new team if ongoing negotiations in Indianapolis between his agent, Tom Condon, and new Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, do not come to an amicable conclusion. Condon has rejected the Jets' proposed 2006 pay cut from $9 million to $1 million.
____________________________________________

The task for the Patriots will be finding that player. Some who could be on their radar screen include Stanford’s Jon Alston, a 6-foot-1, 220-pounder with great football smarts; UTEP’s Thomas Howard, a 6-3, 239-pounder who advanced from walk-on safety to Senior Bowl standout; and Maryland’s D’Qwell Jackson, a 6-foot, 227-pounder nicknamed the Qwell-a-Monster for his big hits.
____________________________________________

When Mike Bell hired his agents, he had one request. "He told us that he really wants to be a Denver Bronco," said agent Steve Feldman, who, along with Josh Luchs, represents the University of Arizona running back. "He said that was his dream." It's uncertain if Bell, who lived in Denver until he was 11 before moving to Arizona and counts John Elway as his hero, will accomplish his goal. But he may be on his way. He was one of the running backs the Broncos studied at the NFL scouting combine.
____________________________________________

After Florida's Chad Jackson and his 4.32-second 40, the combine's fastest players by position in the 40 so far: Oklahoma offensive lineman Chris Chester, 4.88; UCLA running back Maurice Drew, 4.39; and Texas A&M quarterback Reggie McNeal, 4.35.
____________________________________________

The Bucs arrived at the scouting combine looking for a kicker. And like last year, the kicker the Bucs came to look at the hardest was an OhioState product. A year after they strongly contemplated drafting Buckeyes specialist Mike Nugent, the Bucs are looking at possibly drafting Nugent's replacement, Josh Huston.
____________________________________________

Expect Florida WR Chad Jackson to start climbing some mock draft boards after yesterday when he ran a 4.32 40-yard dash and performed well in receiving drills. Before the combine, the 6-foot, 213-pounder had been projected to go anywhere from Rounds 2-4. Now, he could wind up being a first-round pick.
____________________________________________

The Falcons are in search of help at safety but could very well draft a cornerback with the No. 15 overall pick of the NFL draft April 29-30 — if Virginia Tech's Jimmy Williams is available. Although Williams spent the first two years in college playing safety and is built like a safety (6 feet 2, 213 pounds) and hits like a safety, "I prefer to play cornerback, and I want teams to know I want to play corner," Williams said Sunday at the NFL scouting combine.
____________________________________________

The latest buzz about Texas quarterback Vince Young at the NFL Scouting Combine: his score on the 50-question Wonderlic Test. It was reported to NFL general managers Saturday that Young correctly answered just six of the 50 questions on the 12-minute exam designed to test logic and cognitive ability. To put that total in perspective: The average score among the top 10 draft picks a year ago reportedly was 22. The catch is that the test results are private, given only to the teams. Then again, NFL coaches, front-office personnel and agents are known to gossip, which is why there have been leaks. Then came reports Sunday that Young was allowed to retake the test and that he scored a more respectable 16. Keep in mind, none of this information ever has been released in an official capacity. But Alex Smith, the quarterback who was taken No. 1 a year ago, made a 40. Former Longhorn quarterbacks who took the test include Chris Simms, who got a 22, and Major Applewhite, with a 26.
____________________________________________

OhioState linebacker A.J. Hawk has seen his name linked to Green Bay in various mock drafts and wouldn't mind going there. "I try not to pay attention to too much of it," Hawk said. "I can play anywhere; any team that wants me I'll gladly go. Especially a team like Green Bay with the tradition they have, the fans they have, it would be unbelievable."
____________________________________________

Miami's Devin Hester, who played defensive back, wide receiver and was a kickoff and punt returner, interviewed with Cleveland, Cincinnati and New England. The Bengals asked him about playing both ways. "I would love to do that," Hester said.
____________________________________________

Of all the things Ted Thompson has to worry about, wide receiver Javon Walker's unhappiness with his contract apparently ranks pretty far down the Green Bay Packers general manager's list. "I don't think it's worth getting all worked up about," Thompson said Sunday in the crowded hallway of the IndianaConvention Center. "Business is business, and we'll be talking to those guys (Walker and McGuire). This is not unusual. Players are sometimes unsatisfied with their contracts. Sometimes teams are unsatisfied and it's the other way around. It's part of business."
____________________________________________

Jeremy Bloom did not finish among the top 10 receivers in the 40, then skipped the other physical skills tests at the combine. He will have a full workout for NFL scouts April 1 at the Velocity Sports Performance facility in Redondo Beach, Calif.
____________________________________________

Monmouth WR Miles Austin also ran extremely well. His 4.47 40 was the sixth-best time of the 20 receivers in his group. Austin dropped a couple of passes, including a short hook, but was pleased with his performance.
____________________________________________

The Jets are thought to be interested in Jay Cutler, but if Vince Young indeed bombed on the intelligence test, there is a chance the Titans could take Cutler one spot earlier. Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher, who coached Cutler in last month's Senior Bowl, wasn't hesitant to praise him the other day.
____________________________________________

If the Steelers lose Antwaan Randle El, Kevin Colbert didn't rule out drafting somebody like Missouri quarterback Brad Smith, who could play a variety of positions in the NFL.

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said Saturday he plans to pay Daunte Culpepper a $6 million roster bonus on March 17 and tried to defuse growing speculation that the organization is going to sever ties with the quarterback by trading or releasing him. Asked if he could definitively say Culpepper was going to be on the Vikings roster in 2006, Wilf said: "That is our plan, yes. Always was." He reiterated that point in two follow-up questions. ... While Wilf tried to downplay potential trade discussions, he did not rule them out. "I don't know," he said. "I'm not involved with anything like that. ... It could be just speculation, it could be other teams asking about him, it could be a lot of things."

Colts president Bill Polian is gambling with Edgerrin James. Yes, he wants the two-time rushing champ carrying the ball for Indianapolis next season, but as James prepares for free agency, Polian is hoping salary-cap restrictions will help keep James from leaving. Still, Polian believes there is a "50-50" chance of James coming back to Indy. Polian hopes to increase his odds this week when he calls Drew Rosenhaus, James' agent. "I'm going to talk to Drew this week and see where Edge is right now, so I'd say it's probably 50-50," Polian said.
____________________________________________

John Abraham is more than ready to sack the Jets. "I don't think they really respect me as a player," Abraham told The Post yesterday in his first public remarks since being slapped with the $8.3 million franchise tag. "I feel I overstayed my welcome in New York. "It's time to move on." Abraham, after playing the complete 16-game 2005 schedule, was led to believe the Jets would reward him with a long-term deal this offseason. Instead, the Jets tagged him against his wishes for the second straight season. "I'm not trying to be mean or rude," Abraham said. "I kinda feel like I'm the one getting thrown under the bus."
____________________________________________

Mike Holmgren signed an eight-year contract when he came to the Seahawks in 1999. He turns 58 this summer. His youngest daughter finishes law school at the University of Washington later this year. A grandfather now, Holmgren craves time with his family. He also badly wants to lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl championship. The team fell just short last season. Holmgren is committed to one more year. Beyond that, he can’t say for certain. “I want the club to feel good about whatever decision I make,” he said. “That’s fair. At the same time, I would ask them to honor whatever decision I make. “Right now as I sit here, I don’t know.”
____________________________________________

Coach Marty Schottenheimer said he wants Drew Brees back and believes the Chargers will be even stronger with him. Later, he acknowledged an icy relationship with General Manager A.J. Smith and said he was uncertain if everyone in the organization is pulling in the same direction. “I think it's important that there always be communication between the coach and the general manager,” he said during a break at the annual NFL Scouting Combine. “I've sought to see that realized, but, quite frankly, there hasn't been as much communication as I would like.
____________________________________________

Coach Jim Mora will have to get his Atlanta Falcons into the playoffs next season or risk losing his job. If they don't make it, look for Ken Whisenhunt, a Georgia native and former Falcons tight end, to be a top candidate to replace him.
____________________________________________

The Eagles probably won't be able to trade Terrell Owens, who is expected to be released soon. The Broncos will be in the hunt for his services, but don't count out the Cowboys. Bill Parcells had lunch the other day with Owens' agent, Drew Rosenhaus. It's an open secret that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones covets Owens.
____________________________________________

There's a decent chance that Vikings free-agent cornerback Brian Williams will sign with the Packers. So, by putting an NFL transition tag on him, Minnesota could affect Green Bay's salary cap, making the Packers pay more than they otherwise would. It's an old salary cap strategy.
____________________________________________

The Wizard of Odds reports... Things do not appear to be going well at the NFL combine for former Texas quarterback Vince Young, once thought to be the top pick of the draft, has seen his stock tumble to where one scouting service ranks him as no better than the sixth-best quarterback in the draft. Now comes a report that Young scored 6 on the Wonderlic personnel test, which is given to all prospects at the combine. To put this in perspective, only one person in 100,000 scores a perfect 50. Harvard's Pat McInally (1975) is the only prospect to ace the test at the combine. The average score for a player at the combine is 19. The average score overall — hundreds of corporations use the Wonderlic — is 21. But a score under 10 is an indication of literacy problems. Former Iowa State running back Darren Davis reportedly has the record for lowest score, a 4. Former Florida State kicker Sebastian Janikowski reportedly got a 9. If Young did do this poorly, it will be another knock on him.
____________________________________________

The Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens are waiting to speak to Shaun Alexander about what it would take to bring the MVP to their city. Arizona has lacked a back of Alexander's caliber, and Baltimore is facing the possibility of losing Jamal Lewis and Chester Taylor to free agency.
____________________________________________

Unless the Bucs increase their proposal to Mike Alstott, the fullback will likely retire. Alstott wants to return for an 11th season, but he is believed to be seeking a $1.5-million salary as he received last season.
____________________________________________

The Chiefs will have an interest in Ty Law, but they have cap problems. Chiefs coach Herman Edwards would love to have Law, and some Jets players believe Edwards coddled Law last season so he'd be inclined to play for the coach again in 2006.
____________________________________________

The Steelers can't keep everyone, which is why they'll likely lose Antwaan Randle El, who will seek a lucrative deal and a chance to be a No. 1 receiver in free agency. The Steelers could re-sign unrestricted free agent Quincy Morgan to ease the loss of Randle El, or they could bring in some available wideouts. Thirty-eight wide receivers are available in free agency, including Joe Jurevicius and Peerless Price.
____________________________________________

Washington Commanders coach Joe Gibbs said yesterday backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey and his agent have been given permission to explore trade opportunities and that the team is also discussing potential deals with other NFL teams. Ramsey, the Commanders' first-round pick in 2002, has started only eight games the past two seasons and remains the odd man out with Mark Brunell returning as the starter and second-year player Jason Campbell pegged as the quarterback of the future. The New York Jets and Miami Dolphins are potential suitors for Ramsey, who has one year left on his rookie contract and carries a reasonable $1.688 million cap number this season.
____________________________________________

Angelo Wright, the new agent for Packers free agent nose tackle Grady Jackson, said he believes his client deserves a contract averaging around $5 million per season. Wright specializes in big, fat guys such as Jackson, representing Buffalo's Sam Adams (four years, $10.25 million, $3.1 million in bonuses), Minnesota's Pat Williams (three years, $13 million, $6 million in bonuses) and Oakland's Ted Washington (four years, $14 million, $4 million in bonuses) - all of whom signed big-money deals in the past two years. "If (the Packers) pay him fair market value, he'll come back," Wright said. "In Grady's case, yeah, he can get in better shape and improve on some things, which we have addressed and he's working on now. But when you look at the good two-gap guys or the nose tackles that are effective, they're the older guys who know how to play and know how to compete."
____________________________________________

The best free-agent quarterback for the Vikings would seem to be Drew Brees, but he could cost $15 million in guaranteed money, and he's coming back after shoulder surgery.
____________________________________________

New Orleans Pro Bowl guard LeCharles Bentley Bentley becomes the No. 1 most highly coveted free-agent offensive lineman. In a market where multiple teams are looking to upgrade their offensive lines -- Arizona, Baltimore, Cleveland, Dallas, Miami, amongst them -- Bentley is expected to have multiple suitors. Guards ordinarily do not command big dollars. But this year, Bentley will.
____________________________________________

Bill Cowher is due for a contract extension and, for the first time in a while, he'll negotiate from a position of strength. The Steelers previously extended Cowher's contract two years ago, after the team finished with a 6-10 record. His previous extension occurred before the 2001 season when the Steelers hadn't made the playoffs in the previous three seasons. If Art and Dan Rooney were willing to give him extensions with raises during the down times, what will they do for him during the best of times? Cowher, by virtue of his record and longevity, should rank among the highest-paid coaches in the league, where Joe Gibbs earns more than $5 million annually.
____________________________________________

Receiver Koren Robinson visited with members of the new Vikings coaching staff and is expected to sign a multiyear deal in the near future.
____________________________________________

Colts DE Raheem Brock, an unrestricted free agent as signed a 5-year contract extention with the team. Complete terms of the deal are now known but the agreement was confirmed by Brock’s agent Kevin Pompey on Friday night.
____________________________________________

The combine, a staple in Indianapolis for nearly 25 years, may be moving to another city at some point in the near future. Jeff Foster, executive director of National Football Scouting, said Friday that there is a possibility that the five-day event might end up relocating to a warm-weather site.
____________________________________________

The Steelers didn't place a franchise tag on receiver Antwaan Randle El or safety Chris Hope for many reasons, including their traditional reluctance to use that tag. But the biggest reason is those two players aren't worth it. It would cost more than $6 million for Randle El and more than $4 million for Hope. The Steelers don't have the room on their salary cap, nor the inclination to pay either player that much.
____________________________________________

It looks as if Ben Roethlisberger will not need surgery on his injured right thumb. He will wait another week or so to determine that fact, but the prognosis looks good that it will heal on its own. Roethlisberger's thumb was sprained Nov. 28, and he played the next nine games with the injury, using a thumb support under a glove. Considering Roethlisberger is the superstitious sort (remember his victory beard that began at the start of the team's eight-game winning streak?), might he open next season wearing a glove on his right hand?
____________________________________________

A popular rumor making the rounds at the NFL Combine is that Chargers GM A.J. Smith favors Philip Rivers and is using the Drew Brees “medical concerns” excuse as means to get the youngster on the field.
____________________________________________

Bill Polian was asked Saturday during a news conference at the NFL Scouting Combine here if the Colts are in the market for a new kicker. "In our minds, we are looking," he said. "Mike will be free and he'll probably elect to go somewhere else. We figure it will be an area we have to fill.'' Repeated attempts to contact Mike Vanderjagt have been unsuccessful.
____________________________________________

Priest Holmes went to California to see his spine specialist, told a family member he was ‘fine,’ then, in typical Holmes fashion, slipped into obscurity. As of late Saturday, only one thing seemed certain regarding the ever-mysterious Chiefs running back: The mystery of his future will probably drag on for a while. Chiefs coach Herm Edwards and president/general manager Carl Peterson said they hadn’t talked to Holmes as of Saturday afternoon but that there was plenty of time to do so.
____________________________________________

The Steelers hoped to make DE Brett Keisel a priority to sign, but instead he could come back to haunt them -- as a starter in Cleveland. The Browns have plenty of cap room, and Keisel might be someone they target and sign quickly. Two of their top needs are an outside linebacker/pass rusher and a 3-4 defensive end. Keisel can start for them at end and/or serve as a pass rusher.
____________________________________________

Nearly two months removed from the constant speculation that he was going to retire, Bill Parcells admits that it was something that was never truly a possibility. "No, I never really considered not coming back," Parcells said. It was not the time for the Cowboys' coach to leave. Not yet. Not like this. "I'll know when it's time," he said. "Whether people think it's time already, that's the nature of the business. I'll know."
____________________________________________

Who Knew? The toughest 2006 NFL schedule belongs to none other than the New Orleans/San Antonio/Baton Rouge Saints. Their 2006 opponents had a .566 winning percentage last season.
____________________________________________

The Falcons plan to exercise a clause in quarterback Michael Vick's contract that would turn a forthcoming $7 million roster bonus into a signing bonus. Vick would get his money up front and the team would be allowed to pro-rate the cap impact over the rest of his contract, which expires in 2014. The Falcons also plan to restructure or extend the contracts of several key players, with running back Warrick Dunn, fullback Justin Griffith, defensive end Patrick Kerney and linebacker Keith Brooking the most likely.
____________________________________________

Marvin Demoff, longtime agent for Dolphins linebacker Junior Seau, believes Seau's days in Miami are over. ''There have been no discussions," Demoff said. ''We're assuming that each party believes they are better off separating from the other." The Dolphins are expected to begin releasing players or restructuring contracts to create room under the salary cap before the start of the free agent signing period March 3. Seau currently counts for $2.92 million against their cap. He is 37 and has ended the past two seasons on injured reserve. Cutting Seau and quarterback Gus Frerotte would open up some cap room for the possible pursuit of San Diego quarterback Drew Brees, who will become a free agent
____________________________________________

If 2007 winds up being an uncapped year, it could be a godsend to a player like Pats DE Richard Seymour, who is considered by many the best all-around defensive lineman in the game and would become a free agent in that uncapped offseason. ''He'd be the new Reggie White," one agent said. Agent Leigh Steinberg said, ''I think that there would be certain teams that would be free spenders if we get to an uncapped year. I think it would be a very exciting time." Steinberg believes the salary cap is actually hurting the game more than it helps.

The fact that our starting guards are on the down side of their careers and our starting centers have deficiencies in certain areas.......Bentley whom has been an ALL Pro at Guard and Center should be our No.1 target this offseason followed closely by Kicker.

His combination of hard-nosed play, gritty temperament and polished blocking techniques has sparked Bentley's rise to emerge as one of the NFL's top interior linemen in just three seasons. Among the club's strongest players, he made a successful switch to center last season, his college position, handling all line calls and adjustments. Has started all 43 games he has played in since arriving in New Orleans as a second-round pick in 2002, including all 16 games in 2004. Pro Bowl pick in 2003 at guard was a near-unanimous choice for NFL All-Rookie honors in 2002. Bentley was selected as the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year by Sports Illustrated that season.

2004 - Started all 16 games for the first time...Took over as the first team center in training camp, his college position, and made quick conversion, becoming one of the unit's leaders...Voted as an alternate to the Pro Bowl.

2003 - Started the first 13 games at RG and was the foundation of the offensive line before being placed on injured reserve, Dec. 27, with left knee sprain. Injury required off-season surgery to repair the damaged ligaments...Suffered knee sprain in the third quarter vs. Indianapolis, Sept. 28, but returned to action the following week...Suffered left knee sprain vs. Tampa Bay, Dec. 7, in the third quarter and was inactive the next week vs. New York Giants...Placed on injured reserve, Dec. 27...Voted to the Pro Bowl the following week...Key part of an offensive line that helped RB Deuce McAllister post nine-straight 100-yard performances and 1,641 yards on the season.

2002 - Started 14 games at RG and thrived as part of a unit that helped RB Deuce McAllister notch eight 100-yard games and the second-highest rushing total in franchise history (1,388 yards). Offensive line also protected QB Aaron Brooks as he set a club record with 27 TD passes...Showed no rookie jitters in first NFL contest despite lining up against All-Pro DT Warren Sapp in opening-day victory at Tampa Bay, Sept. 8. Bentley helped limit Sapp to three tackles...Continued his consistent play throughout the season, bouncing back from a sprained right ankle suffered in the first quarter at Carolina, Nov. 10, that sidelined the rookie at Atlanta, Nov. 17, and vs. Cleveland, Nov. 24.

Career Stats

College

A three-year starter and four-year letterman at Ohio State...Moved into starting center slot for the Buckeyes as a junior in 2000, when he was named second-team All-Big Ten by league's coaches and media...As a senior, Bentley played every snap and was named the recipient of the Rimington Award, given to the nation's top center, as well as receiving consensus All-American and unanimous All-Big Ten honors. Also named Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year...Earned Player of the Game honors after posting 20 knockdowns against UCLA...Only true freshman offensive lineman who was not redshirted and he appeared in all 12 games...Human development and family science major.

Bentley should be a top priority for us this season...

Should, but I think we'll pass on him, though... That's if JJ's not blowing smoke.

Yeah I don't think we get into a bidding war. Maybe a guy like Mawae or something like it. The only move I feel confident about is Fabini.

Saints with toughest schedule?

That really is a fake statistic -- the winning percentage of their opponents is inflated because most of them beat .... the Saints. You will usually find that the worst performing teams end up with the highest opponent winning % at the end of the year. Their losses bump those winning %s 5 to 6%

I agree... rating the schedule prior to the year is ridiculous... and if done correctly, you need to take out the games that teams played against each other...

The true measure would be to rate the schedule strength at the end of the year...

Nice try. :D

I think 5-11 teams play just as many pushovers as 11-5 teams.

The only thing that really skews the numbers is probably if you play in a weak or strong division. The Saints play in one of the toughest divisions in football. They play more than 1/3 of their games against teams with .500 or better records, thus a boost to their opponents winning percentage compared to a team like the Seahawks that plays in the NFC West and 6 games against teams with a combined record of 15-33.

I like it too. They are scared to make anymore comments about TO, after the Eagles tried to hit Jerry Jones with the tampering saga during the season, when he had some words about TO.

These guys are waiting for his release. It's going to be a bidding war...

If TO is smart, he'd take a 2-3 year deal with the Cowboys, incentive laden, humble himself and throw himself at the mercy of Bill Parcells.

What scares me is that Jerry doesn't seem to want to address any of our problems this year. Not going after a O lineman in the draft, not going to get an older veteran, The TO answer is vaugue. Not wanting to spend alot of money on a kicker. I don't know about this offseason.

Regarding the OL, Jerry has said that Dallas needs to build "from within" and that we already have too much money tied up in old players.

But what's interesting is Jerry said the leading FA's are in their 30's while we all know Bentley is 26 and in his prime.

It would be foolish to not go after Bentley, IMO, as the #1 FA signee. We went after three big-money signings last year... all we need this year is one.

Hate to say it cause the Cowboys could really use him, but judging by JJ's interview, I don't think they're going for him at all. He basically said no. He had too much involved in other linemen and didn't want another big contract. But Jerry, 2 of those big contracts will probably be gone next year!! Think about the future Jerry!! Think about the future!!

Did FA start when I wasn't looking?

That depends on who the cowboys are targeting and not just this year, but the year after and the year after that...

We've got our own upcoming FAs to worry about that we actually want to keep. So I could see them seeking out mid-level vets in order to conserve $$ when it's time to pay our pro bowl TE and Safety, as well as our top corner...

I imagine they're thinking past 2006 as far as cap dollars...

"While Vince Young's Wonderlic tests created a huge controversy, he was busy interviewing with different teams, including the Texans. "I told them I wanted a chance to lead them to a Super Bowl win.""

Wow...where have I read "it's important to be a leader", before! I can't seem to remember the name of that one QB that the Cowboys had that always proclaimed himself to "be the leader"!

Anyone remember the name of that QB....?

LMAO Was thinking the same thing. I'm always wary of the fellas who want to proclaim themselves a leader before they've won us anything. ;)
