The Texans are weighing their options between drafting Reggie Bush or Texas quarterback Vince Young. They will meet with both players at their Houston offices this week, and because they hold the top pick in the draft, they can begin contract negotiations with one or more players at any time. Bush will visit Reliant Stadium on Thursday. Young will visit and go through an on-field workout with the Texans on Friday.

Joey Harrington remains a member of the Lions in name only, and the connection likely will be severed officially this week in negotiations involving Harrington's contract and compensation to the Lions for any trade. Harrington visited Miami and Cincinnati last week in his search to find a new team and appears to have made the Dolphins his first choice. The Miami Herald reported over the weekend Harrington and the Dolphins were close to agreement on terms of a two-year contract. However, Harrington's contract with the Lions has two years to run, and Lions president Matt Millen has said he will trade Harrington's rights to the highest bidder. Miami does not have a fifth- or sixth-round pick this year but has three seventh-round picks. It is unlikely Millen would trade Harrington for a seventh-round picks unless he is convinced it is all he can get. The Lions also could make a deal for a pick in the 2007 draft. Besides Miami and Cincinnati, Seattle, Denver, Dallas, Kansas City and Oakland have expressed an interest in Harrington.

Free agent cornerback Jamar Fletcher has canceled today's scheduled visit to Commanders Park, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, and does not anticipate future negotiations with the club. Fletcher will visit other clubs this week instead, according to the source, who said the Commanders were close to signing another free agent cornerback.

Despite the presence of two Heisman Trophy winners on the field, it was running back LenDale White's absence that stirred the most conversation at USC's pro day Sunday. As quarterback Matt Leinart and running back Reggie Bush went through a number of drills with 16 Trojans teammates, White was absent after only 15 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press. White's stock, which had risen since his performance in the Rose Bowl, started to drop when he bowed out of his workout by saying he pulled a hamstring at the NFL combine in Indianapolis — almost six weeks earlier. He also weighed in at 244 pounds — 6 pounds heavier than he was at the combine.

Browns GM Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel have analyzed Charlie Frye thoroughly enough to turn an orange helmet blue. They must trust their projection, which, of course, they won’t share with us. If they think Frye can be close to as effective as Jay Cutler over the long haul, they should hoist the “Up With Chuck” banner and spend the No. 12 pick on any other position. If their studies indicate Cutler projects as clearly better than Frye, they shouldn’t leave Cutler there for the vultures. Or the Ravens.

The Buffalo Bills likely will have 10 picks in this month's NFL college draft: 8, 42, 70, 73, 105, 143, 178, 216 and 248. The 10th selection figures to come from Houston for wide receiver Eric Moulds. The Texans reportedly want to give up their fourth-round pick (98). The Bills would prefer one of Houston's two third-round picks (65 or 66).

An entire Jets entourage, including the bosses, will be in Los Angeles on April 17 to huddle with Matt Leinart, the Daily News learned. That session will include a workout and a skull session in the classroom. The Jets, picking fourth in the April 29 draft, could be in position to select the former Southern Cal star. And that would be just fine with Leinart. "I love New York, I'm a fan of the city," Leinart told The News an hour after his workout, relaxing with friends at a burger joint a few blocks from campus. "It's out of my hands, but to have the possibility of playing for the New York Jets, it would be sweet. It would be cool. "Broadway Joe (Namath) is the last big-time guy they've had, a star on and off the field," he continued. "I'm confident that I could be that kind of player."

The 49ers' holdover quarterback depth chart of Alex Smith, Ken Dorsey, Cody Pickett and re-signed Jesse Palmer, who had a combined 13 starts last season, isn't necessarily the group coach Mike Nolan will stick with in 2006. "It's OK, but I'm always looking for veteran presence on our football team," said Nolan.

A report on WAXY 790 said there was a Doug Flutie sighting at the Hollywood Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Friday night, sparking rumors of a Dolphins connection. Flutie is well known in South Florida for another connection -- he threw a Hail Mary pass to Gerard Phelan to give Boston College a last-second victory over the Hurricanes in the Orange Bowl in 1984. Flutie is 43 and played with the Patriots last season. Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said he was unaware of any official team visit with Flutie. Flutie's agent wasn't available for a comment.

The Bengals are feverishly trying to extend the contracts of Levi Jones and Willie Anderson before the draft. If neither deal gets done by April 29, the team should consider drafting an OT in the first or second round. With Virginia's D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Auburn's Marcus McNeill poised to fly off the draft board early, the Bengals will still have plenty of quality to choose from later in the first round. Rest assured Eric Winston (Miami of Florida), Jonathan Scott (Texas) and Winston Justice (USC) will get heavy consideration.

While the Broncos are interested in lame-duck Detroit quarterback Joey Harrington, he soon may be out of the picture. Harrington is in talks with Miami. If a deal can be agreed upon, then a trade with the Lions will have to be struck. Harrington has recently visited Miami and Cincinnati. If talks break down with Miami, the Bengals are expected to make a bid. If both deals fall apart, Denver is expected to emerge.

Reggie Bush, who has never visited Houston, will be joined Thursday by his agent, Joel Segal, and his marketing consultant, Mike Ornstein. Because Bush had dinner Saturday night with Casserly and Kubiak, much of Thursday will be spent meeting with Texans owner Bob McNair and some of the assistant coaches.

Southern California running back Reggie Bush entered his workout for the NFL scouts Sunday as if it were a game. It wasn't simply about targeting specific numbers. Bush had just one specific objective: to secure his place as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. By late Sunday afternoon, he stood outside the USC practice facility confident he had done just that. "There's always that .1 percent chance, but pretty much I figure 99.9 percent I am (the top pick)," said Bush, who checked in at 5-11, 202 pounds. "I did a pretty good job today. I think I proved to them that I should be the No. 1 pick." With a ticket to Houston on his mind, Bush was nearly flawless in the different stations. He ran the fastest time of the day in the 40-yard dash — 4.33 seconds. He recorded the highest vertical jump — 40.5 inches. And he recorded the longest broad jump — 10 feet, 8.5 inches. The biggest surprise to the more than 150 scouts and NFL personnel watching, however, was Bush's ability to complete 24 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press. That beat the majority of his teammates, many of whom are bigger than him.

About 150 representatives from every club were on campus for USC's Pro Day. It was an event that was an unbelievable production, one that was bigger than USC had ever put forth before. Just a few in attendance were Packers GM Ted Thompson, Rams coach Scott Linehan, Panthers coach John Fox, Texans coach Gary Kubiak, Giants VP of player evaluation Chris Mara, Eagles VP of player personnel Jason Licht, Vikings director of college scouting Scott Studwell, and the entire Titans coaching staff, including GM Floyd Reese.

Washington has been seeking a nickel cornerback in free agency and brought in veteran Kenny Wright for a visit last month. Wright was drafted in the fourth round by Minnesota in 1999 and spent three seasons with the Vikings and three with Houston before joining Jacksonville in 2005.

NFL Fashion News: Browns owner Randy Lerner is bringing back the team's old duds for next season, including gray face masks, original striping on jersey sleeves and the old, darker shade of brown. The team will wear only white pants and alternate between brown and white jerseys - never orange. "This is not about branding. This is about the Cleveland Browns," Lerner said.
