The Vikings spent part of Monday discussing a possible trade for Atlanta backup quarterback Matt Schaub, two people with knowledge of the situation said. The talks were casual and did not lead to formal negotiations, the sources said, but the interaction confirms the Vikings' desire to add depth to the position, either through a trade or in this month's draft. Discussions could resume as the April 29-30 draft approaches, but as of Monday no further talks were planned. Any team that acquired Schaub almost certainly would seek to sign him to a long-term contract extension. The Vikings had no such discussions Monday, the sources said. Schaub's agent, David Dunn, did not return phone calls Monday.

The 11-year relationship between the Titans and their quarterback took an unexpected turn yesterday when the team informed Steve McNair it didn't want him working out at Baptist Sports Park. McNair's agent, Bus Cook, said it's a clear sign the veteran's days with the team are numbered. "A month ago they say he needs to be there to get familiar with the young guys, and now they tell him to get out? I have never seen anything like that in my life," Cook said last night. "They can sugarcoat it any way they want to, but when you throw your starting quarterback off the property, an MVP, Pro Bowl guy who led them to the Super Bowl and one of the greatest players in the history of the team … "To just to throw him out? After this, I don't think Steve would want to go back any more.'' An associate of McNair said the quarterback was disappointed and declined to discuss the matter last night. Titans Coach Jeff Fisher, also in Los Angeles, referred to the "complicated" contract situation.

The Seahawks expect to have free-agent cornerback Ty Law in for a visit. Law, 32, has won Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and was a Pro Bowl selection as a New York Jet last season. The 11-year veteran tied for the NFL lead in interceptions with 10 in 2005. The Jets released Law in February as a cost-cutting move. Law has won three Super Bowls and has been selected to the Pro Bowl five times. He is drawing interest from several teams. Law might be the second left cornerback the Seahawks seek to complement right corner Marcus Trufant.

The Giants are still in the hunt for linebacker LaVar Arrington, a three-time Pro Bowler with the Commanders. An Internet report said Arrington and the Giants were close to on a six-year deal.

Although a deal had not materialized Monday, the Miami Dolphins remained closely tied to discussions with Joey Harrington, said a source close to the Detroit Lions quarterback. All sides — the Dolphins, Lions and Harrington — would like to reach an agreement by the end of the week, the source said, but a technicality about Harrington's trade value has delayed any contracts. The Cincinnati Bengals and the Dolphins have shown the most interest in Harrington, another source said. The difference in negotiations has to do with the quality of the draft picks each team has available for a trade.

Four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Charles Woodson, the biggest name the Green Bay Packers have courted during free agency, visited the club's Lambeau Field headquarters Monday but departed without signing with the team. "It seems like he had a pretty good visit," Packers general manager Ted Thompson said. The Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers appear to be the only teams competing for Woodson, who spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Oakland Raiders.

The quarterback most likely to retire is former Oakland Raiders signal caller Kerry Collins. Those who know Collins say he is seriously considering retirement, and it would not be surprising if he never played another down in the NFL. Having made the money he has over 12 seasons in Carolina, New Orleans, New York and Oakland, Collins doesn't have the burning desire to play football the way he once might have.

Talks continued Monday between the Texans and Buffalo Bills over wide receiver Eric Moulds, who is in town to meet with Texans officials and take a physical. Last week, Moulds, 32, agreed to a $14 million four-year contract with the Texans, which included a $5 million signing bonus. But because Moulds is under contract for two more years with the Bills, the Texans must give compensation to the Bills to make the trade complete. Negotiations between Texans general manager Charley Casserly and Bills general manager Marv Levy continued Monday. The Bills are asking for a fourth-round pick in the April draft; the Texans are offering a fifth-round pick. If the Bills don't accept the Texans' offer, they risk losing Moulds for nothing. They have failed in their attempts to restructure Moulds' contract, and they have made it clear to Moulds that they will not pay the base salary of $7.1 million that he's due next season. If the Bills cut Moulds, they receive no compensation.

The attorneys for the Washington Commanders' Sean Taylor intend to file a motion to dismiss the felony assault charges against the safety during a hearing today, while the prosecution contends there are insufficient grounds for such a request. Taylor was charged with three counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon last year, each of which can carry a three-year mandatory minimum sentence. He is scheduled for an April 10 trial. Richard Sharpstein, one of three lawyers representing Taylor, said he was finalizing the motion last night.

Another running back who had been thought to be a potential Colts draft pick, Southern California’s Len Dale White, failed to impress NFL scouts at the school’s Pro Day on Sunday. He did not do any running, citing a persistent hamstring injury. He did some light work on the bench press (15 repetitions at 225 pounds) and showed up at the workout much heavier than expected.

The Indianapolis Colts locked up running back James Mungro for the 2006 season Monday, giving the team a couple of experienced players in the offensive backfield heading into the upcoming National Football League draft.

Some NFL scouts reportedly believe quarterback Vince Young won't be among the top 10 picks in the NFL draft on April 29. If that's true (and I'm not buying it), it's amazing how much his stock has dropped without playing a game since his spectacular Rose Bowl performance for Texas in its upset victory over Southern California for the national title. If Young were available at No. 8, should the Buffalo Bills take him? The latest hot name for that pick is USC offensive tackle Winston Justice, who might still be available if Buffalo traded down a few spots.

There is mounting speculation that former Virginia Tech QB Marcus Vick won't be selected in the seven-round NFL draft.

The Bengals talked again Monday with the agent for Jamie Martin, and the former Rams' backup/part-time starter could be the fourth quarterback the Bengals take to training camp. If a deal could be reached, Martin would join Craig Krenzel and Doug Johnson in the battle for two roster spots behind Carson Palmer. With the Dolphins favored to engineer a trade with the Lions and sign Joey Harrington, the Bengals again are turning toward Martin.

Ricky Williams returned to South Florida on Monday, ostensibly to join the Dolphins' offseason conditioning program, even as the specter of an NFL suspension continues to haunt him. Williams, who faces a one-year ban for a positive test in the NFL's substance abuse program if an appeals hearing doesn't go his way April 10, arrived on request from Dolphins coach Nick Saban. ''Nick wanted him to get back into the mix of the offseason program the last time we talked,'' agent Leigh Steinberg said Monday. ``That was [last Tuesday]. He was headed back to South Florida and I was headed out, but he just asked if Ricky would return. ``Nick has been just exceptional throughout the entire process, trying to get Ricky back in and involved.

Buffalo wide receiver Eric Moulds spent Monday visiting with Houston officials, undergoing a physical and laying the groundwork for the Texans to complete a trade with the Bills. All that remains right now is the Texans working out a trade package with the Bills, which could happen anytime soon.

One way or another, it now looks like cornerback Charles Woodson is going to wind up by the Bay -- either Green Bay or Tampa Bay. Woodson spent today visiting Green Bay. One Packers official said the team has a "significant interest" in signing the former Raiders cornerback. It should. The Packers need another cornerback to start opposite Al Harris, and signing him would allow Green Bay to move its 2004 first-round pick Ahmad Carroll to nickel back. Then there is this factor, which could well be the deciding factor in where Woodson winds up: The Packers still have a bushel of salary-cap room available, whereas Tampa Bay does not.
____________________________________________
There was no quick signing following Charles Woodson’s free-agent visit with the Green Bay Packers. Woodson, a cornerback-safety who is one of the top free agents still available this offseason, is believed to have left his visit to Green Bay on Monday without a contract, just as he left his recent visit to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Packers and Bucs appear to be the main teams pursuing Woodson, though the Seattle Seahawks, who need a starting cornerback, also might have some interest in the former Oakland Raiders first-round draft pick and Heisman Trophy winner.

If Ty Law isn't the answer, the Seahawks might consider former San Diego CB Jamar Fletcher, who has free-agent visits to some teams planned after canceling a trip to Washington. Fletcher has also played for the Miami Dolphins.

A source said Monday that the Dolphins are working on a deal to acquire Lions quarterback Joey Harrington. The source also said that the Dolphins were willing to give Harrington a two-year contract, but the Lions were holding out for a higher draft pick. Detroit is reportedly looking for at least a sixth-round pick, but the Dolphins already have traded away their fifth- and sixth-round picks. They have three seventh-round picks to bargain with or they could possibly dangle a future pick.

The uncertain status of Tank Johnson could alter the Bears’ free-agent and draft plans, especially if they fear the promising defensive tackle will miss a good portion of the season. Johnson, the Bears’ second-round pick in 2004, had surgery late last month after suffering a torn quadriceps muscle during a workout and is expected to be out 4-6 months. The Bears also don’t expect to lose Johnson for the season, but they’ll have to wait until further along in his rehab to know whether his absence will be closer to four months or six. In the meantime, the Bears will take another look at a free-agent pool that has become shallow after a month of heavy spending throughout the league, and they’ll take a closer look at an interesting draft class of defensive linemen.

The Commanders announced they has signed free agent cornerback Kenny Wright, prompting free agent corner Jamar Fletcher to cancel yesterday's scheduled visit to Washington. Details of the contract were not immediately available. The Commanders have been seeking a nickel back, and brought Wright in for a visit last month. Wright, 28, is a seven-year veteran who spent last season with Jacksonville, starting all 16 games and getting two interceptions.
