Syracuse, NY -- Five former Syracuse University football players ran, lifted, threw and went through drills for NFL scouts this afternoon in the Carrier Dome.

The workout, which included defensive lineman Arthur Jones, quarterback Greg Paulus, receivers Lavar Lobdell and Mike Owen, and safety Paul Chiara, was held inside Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome and attracted representatives from 20 teams.

The session was the first look at Jones for pro scouts. The former Orange nose tackle missed the final three games of the 2009 season, underwent knee surgery, and missed the NFL Combine and SU’s first workout day March 4 because he was still recovering.

Access to the workout was limited to player interviews after the session. Scouts were unavailable for comment, and players’ run times and other statistics weren’t available. From jackets and fleece pullovers worn by those seen leaving the workout, teams represented included Arizona, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Detroit and Cleveland.

“It went good,” said Jones, who had 19 tackles, seven for a loss, and 1.5 sacks in 2009 before hurting his knee against Pittsburgh. “I think I did a pretty good job. Its a little tougher doing drills by yourself.”

Jones, SU’s defensive anchor last season, was the marquee attraction on Tuesday. He did not run a 40-yard dash, he said, because of tightness in his hamstring. Jones said he had visits lined up in New England on Thursday, and Atlanta next Tuesday.

The Rochester native, who was raised in Endicott, was an All-Big East first-team selection for two years. He was mentioned as a first-round prospect last year, but he had two surgeries in 2009 -- one early in the year to mend a torn pectoral muscle, and one on his knee after hurting it in November.

“I have no idea where I’ll be drafted,” he said. “I think it’s an honor just to get to work out in front of pro scouts. We’ll see.”

Paulus had to cut short a trip to Indianapolis, where he helped cheer his former basketball team, the Duke Blue Devils, past West Virginia in Saturday’s NCAA Tournament semifinal. The former Christian Brothers Academy star, who played four years of basketball at Duke before quarterbacking the Orange last season, drove home from the Final Four and missed Monday night’s final to be at Tuesday’s workout.

“It was good,” he said of the workout, his second for scouts.

Along with throwing, scouts took measurements, had him do a vertical jump, run the 40, and do a three-cone shuttle drill.

“They had a set list of throws they wanted to see,” said Paulus, who completed 193 or 285 passes for 2,024 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Orange in 2009. “I felt good about the way I threw. I think I showed them what I could do a little bit, and hopefully another opportunity presents itself.”

Paulus said he’d love to have a private workout for a team.

“ If anybody wants to see me, I’ll go wherever they want.”

Owen, who caught 12 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown last season for the Orange, was happy with his performance. He said he’d been sick before the March 4 workout and fared much better on Tuesday. He also was back to his regular playing weight of 255.

Even if he doesn’t get drafted, Owen said, he has to stay in shape and be ready in case a team is interested in signing him as a free agent.

Lobdell, who with Owen provided Paulus with a throwing target, said he felt good about the workout. A teammate of Paulus at CBA and last year at SU, Lobdell caught 10 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown in 2009.

Chiara was a safety at SU who played four seasons, from 2004-08.

I have liked that kid for some time now and think he would be a good pickup in the late rounds for us.
