NFL Sunday Ticket Class Action Lawsuit

I just got a notice today of a class action lawsuit against the NFL and the 32 NFL teams on anti-trust grounds. Basically the plaintiffs are claiming that if not for the NFL Sunday Ticket package, televised NFL games would be more available at a lower cost by other means.

The suit is pending and there is no outcomes yet, but if you were a subscribers between June 17, 2011 and February 7, 2023, you are a member of the class unless you exclude yourself.

The notice is to inform me, and other class members, that discovery will include DirecTV turning over records including personal identifying information about customers.

I don't know that this case has any merits but at best I think we wind up with a discount on Sunday Ticket at some point. I doubt there will be any money, but who knows these days. I got a $113 check out of the clear blue a few weeks ago as the member of another class I had no idea even existed.

Perhaps there would be 2 cbs games and 2 fox games. Then perhaps other networks could bid to broadcast other games through fox and cbs similar to Sunday ticket.

Yes there is limited options for watching your team out of town, but those that bought Sunday ticket chose to do so and knew the price.

I guess what I don't understand is why the NFL wouldn't be allowed to do this. They could make football pay per view if they wanted, right?

It doesn't matter. Law firms file these lawsuits because they are the big winners. They take a massive chunk and every one else gets a $5 (probably less) check.

I got a $200 check the other day for some random class action lawsuit I was a member of as well.

I wasn’t even aware of the case, but I’ll take the money I guess. These cases aren’t actually to help the class members, but to land the law firm that filed a case a massive payday.

I had Direct for probably 18 years. I would never jump on some class action suit. They had a service that I didnt have to pay for. I chose to pay for it... now people want to sue them ?? for what???? stupid lawsuit IMO.

The email I got was not very descriptive but it sounds like what the plaintiffs are saying is that the monopoly of the NFL, the lack of competition, allows them to dictate how and when and for how much games are televised because fans have no other choices. Hence, increases prices to levels above what would be possible if the NFL had competition. It is an interesting premise, but I cannot speak to the legal merits. The NFL is a recognized monopoly. And the exclusive rights contract the NFL gave to DirecTV clearly creates a situation where DirecTV could raise prices higher than if they had competition. So is it valid to argue that a monopoly cannot create another monopoly to increase the value of its product? Or something like that? Congress has always allowed the NFL to operate as a monopoly as long as they do not stifle competition.

Based on my description, I would say this case is a loser. At best we will wind up with $5 coupons to apply towards a subscription to the NFL Sunday Ticket. However, I have seen class action lawsuit that appeared more ridiculous than this one wind up with pretty sizable settlements. I think we will get more information in time and the complaint will become more clear.

Thanks for the info. I don’t recall seeing anything from Direct TV. I’ll keep an eye out.

I’ve chosen not to subscribe to YouTube . I get all the Cowboy games locally. And NFLN still has Redzone.

But it’s time for NFL games to be broadcast like a Pay per View for individual games so fans can choose the games they want or a package for each teams rights.

If it’s $300 for all the games. I’d say $75-100 a season for one teams broadcast would be fair.

And I think we’d see a much higher subscription participation for fans just wanting to see all of their favorite teams or matchups of individual games.

That is the sickening part. Even very valid lawsuits where people's health was affected. Very little actually makes it to the victims.

Once I moved to DFW I had no use for it.. except sometimes I like to check out other teams. So I went with a streaming service that gets me all the local channels of every market. So I don't need Sunday Ticket.. I just need my internet connection to stay up! Since DirecTV paid billions of dollars for the rights to broadcast games via Sunday Ticket I don't really begrudge them the right to make money from their investment. That's the free market. Nobody put a gun to anyone's head to buy it and watching football on TV is a luxury not a necessity no matter how much as we would like to think it is.

Will the price of my HU card and looper be reimbursed? That may have been pre-2011, though, so probably doesn't count anyway. This year I got lucky and added a phone line to my Verizon plan for my daughter and got the Sunday Ticket for free.
