NFL Sunday Ticket: There Could Be a Problem With Password Sharing​

TV Answer Man, explain this for me. There is a two stream maximum for the NFL Sunday Ticket so does that mean I could watch in my house and a friend who pays for half of the Ticket price can watch in his house in another town? Would that be okay? — Victor, Reno, Nevada.

Victor, you’re right. Google has said that Sunday Ticket subscribers to either YouTube Primetime Channels or YouTube TV will only have access to two streams at the same time. That means you could watch one game at your house and, yes, a friend (paying or not) could watch a game in his house. This would be helpful for fans who want to share the costs of the Ticket sub which starts at $249 until June 6. The base price jumps $100 after June 6. (See this article for pricing details.)

There will be no IP address restrictions in watching a game, but Google does have one stipulation that could cause a problem with fans with Ticket subscription partners in another town.

Google says you can share your Ticket subscription with members of your ‘family group.’ While that may sound like you are restricted to providing your password to your spouse and/or the kids, you can name anyone as a family group member, including your old pal Joe hundreds of miles away. But Google also says that each family member “must primarily live in the same household.”

Here’s the way it is, if pay for 2 screens there should be no problem as only 2 feeds will run at the same time. Streaming services have no problem charging you so you should have no problem using what you pay for. There is no ethical dilemma use what you pay for how you like and where you like.

The bottom line is they wanna make sure another person isn't getting Sunday Ticket free via password sharing. Honestly, I'm not sure they can control it with millions of accounts.

I wonder if Google got some negative feedback on the pricing and leaked this story about password sharing thinking maybe two friends or family members who would not have otherwise purchased Sunday ticket might go in together and share one account? Some might think sharing robs Google of a potential account, but not if the two people sharing refuse to pay full price. Sharing give Google one new account they never would have had otherwise. This article is basically green lighting password sharing.

My guess is Google is going to overlook sharing, at least initially. It would be difficult to verify anyway.

In my last house I built a set up with seven TVs on the same wall just for NFL.

I did not do the same after moving….but I’d be furious if I was still there. Two at once?

I’m not even getting the package. I’ll just go out for the four or so Cowboys games not shown in the northeast.

Never thought I’d say anything good about Directv, but it seems better than this.

And if the live streaming is going to be anywhere near as bad as baseball, people are going to be pissed.

Maryland is nowhere near Texas...and EVERY cowboys game that isnt game of the week or primetime is blacked out i expect the primetime games to be blacked out but not the 1pm games that we have

Does Sunday Ticket let you pay more for more concurrent streams? If the base price of $250 gets you two streams, can you upgrade to get 3, 4, 5+ streams?

$250 for a 17-week season seems like a great deal, that's less than $15 a week for multiple hours of entertainment, where are you going to get a better value?

And if you can split that in half with a friend? That's less than a dollar per hour entertainment. That's cheaper than parking...

I think that is if you currently have a subscription to youtube. If not then it costs 100 bucks more.
