Have you ever dreamed of being a professional athlete? How about playing two professional sports?
It's not common but Niagara University basketball star, Tyrone Lewis may have his dreams come true. Lewis, a 5'11 senior guard was named to the 2010 CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Defensive All-American Team for basketball, now he may get the chance to play professional football.
Despite not playing organized football since high school in 2005, Lewis worked out Monday on the Niagara University Campus for NFL scouts from five teams, Green Bay, Indianapolis, San Digeo, Cleveland, and Buffalo.
The Green Bay Packers initiated the workout and seem to be starting a new trent, working out college basketball players. In 2009, The Packers were interested in Duke Guard Greg Paulus, who transferred to Syracuse to play quarterback.
Although not given any times, Lewis ran the 40, completed the broad jump, and caught short passes from scouts. It is very unlikely that he will be drafted, but there is a chance a team can sign him as a free agent after the draft.
At Harry S. Truman High School outside Philadelphia, Lewis played on both sides of the ball. He was a wide receiver on offense and played defensive back on defense. His stand out play won him MVP honors in the 2005 Mayors Bowl, as well as making First Team All-League.
Lewis starred as a basketball star at Niagara Unviersity. Basketball scouts say he is too small for the NBA, but Lewis says "If I'm given the oppurtunity to play basketball overseas or football in the NFL I'm going to take the best offer. I can compete with anyone".
Lewis spoke with Stu Boyar from WGRZ-TV and WGRZ.COM Monday after the scouts worked him out.
