ATLANTA -- The NFL has made thigh and knee pads mandatory equipment for the 2013 season, something the players' union could oppose because the move was not collectively bargained.http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7959313/nfl-says-players-wear-thigh-knee-pads-2013

I usually side with the union on most issues, but on this one the union needs to say " Thank you " and shut their collective mouths afterward. They look ridiculously stupid bringing up the " not collectively bargained " issue on this one.

They said this was most likely coming a couople years ago when all this player safety started coming up. It helps reduce injuries and they say it can prevent concussion when head makes impact with the leg because it absorbs some of the shock.

They where warned a while back this was going to happen so no one should be surprised. The players are kind of screwed here if they balk they can not come back on the NFL in the current class action suit.

Yep.

They'd have to wear lead tu-tu's if the NFL said it was 'player safety related'.

I now some colleges were wearing these types of pants a couple years back. One was Ohio St I recall the announcers talking about it

I know unions are a benefit to society. It's just **** like this that makes my head explode.

What do you mean? Honest question.

What I was saying is the players and NLPA can not fight the mandatory pads. With the current player safety issues and former players suing the NFL over player safety they have to wear the pads. A lot of players especially WR and CB balk at the pads because they claim it restrict movement etc etc. The players are screwed in they have no real say in the ruling. They can fight it but then it hurts them long term. Maybe not now but in the future and past players

knee pads, thigh pads, rib pads, cups, facemasks, chin straps and seat belts should all be up to the people who use them. Don't use them, get hurt. Simple.

Mandatory safety regulations like this are beyond asinine imo.

I'm guessing you are against mandatory use of safety belts in cars too as well as car seats for kids?

Thigh pads have evolved over the years. I remember watching Earl Campbell as a kid. His thighs were like tree trunks. The thigh pads were intimidating on him. But maybe the pads gave a false sense of protection give he can barely walk now.

I played not only with thigh pads and knee pads, but also with hip pads. It's just stupid not do so and only because you want to feel " lighter "..

Your wrong. And this is coming from a guy dumb enough to dislike the seat belt law.;)

Bottom line is that the NFL's single greatest detraction from the enjoyment of the game as I see it has always been injuries.

We all hate having our players on the sidelines or significantly limited. Knee and thigh pads should have always been standard and required. If were up to I, rib and knee braces would also be standard.

Now I know many players don't want the slight limitations they bring. Well if they're required, it's a level playing field and injuries are reduced.

What gets me is the rediculous notion that the union would use this as some sort of negotiating tool......

Are you kidding me. It should be just the opposite. The union should be pushing for this and more. They should be demanding the league have the absolute best equipment availible and mandate it's use.

It's a win win win. Good for the players, league and fans.

Uh no, car seats are wayyyy different. If I'm an adult, I have every right to risk myself, not my kid.

.
That's a good point, and I don't disagree. I'm just saying that, from a player standpoint, I would want the freedom to wear what I want.

I know a lot of players used to wear two thigh pads, it bulked up the appearance and the thought was it would also protect you more.

Yeah, but when you have retired players suing because you "didn't do enough" you are kind of forced to start mandating these things.
