We discussed this last year. You need to maintain competitive balance at all costs. Early in the season is when everyone still has a chance to win; part of what makes the NFL so great is that the league refuses to allow one team to become a farm team for another based upon owner alliances, etc.
Above all everyone wants to win. Building a winning team must be a fair process decided mostly in the offseason. How would you feel if late in the year Philly, smelling Superbowl, trades picks and cash to Arizona for Edge James? Arizona has nothing to lose and Philly has everything to gain.
The NFL isn't a league like MLB which laughs at its own trading deadlines-- it's wisely thought out rules that set the NFL apart and make it the success it has become.
