Transactions for Saturday, September 2, 2017
Brenton Bersin - WR - Panthers
Panthers placed WR Brenton Bersin on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, ending his season.
The 2012 UDFA caught two passes in 10 games last season. He has 24 career catches, 13 of which came in 2014. Primarily a special teamer, Bersin turns 28 next spring.
Ka'Deem Carey - RB - Bears
Bears placed RB Ka'Deem Carey on injured reserve following wrist surgery.
He had surgery on August 23 and will miss at least the first four games of the season, although Bears beat writers believe Carey could eventually be released with an injury settlement. Chicago will roll with Benny Cunningham and Tarik Cohen behind Jordan Howard. Jeremy Langford is also on the roster, for now.
Sammie Coates - WR - Browns
Browns acquired WR Sammie Coates and a 2019 seventh-round pick from the Steelers in exchange for a 2018 sixth-round pick.
Coates struggled throughout his time in Pittsburgh as a 2015 third-rounder, whether it was rookie-year mistakes or the injury bug. Injuries have particularly held him back recently. Coates broke his fingers in 2016 then needed groin and knee surgeries after the season. He's extremely gifted physically at 6'1/212 with long arms and good speed but has yet to put it all together. Coates has two years left on his rookie deal and is another downfield threat for DeShone Kizer.
Bene Benwikere - DB - Cowboys
Cowboys acquired CB Bene Benwikere from the Bengals in exchange for a conditional late-round pick.
A once-promising fifth-rounder of the Panthers, Benwikere has bounced all over the place since getting cut by Carolina midway through last se
ason. He'll look to carve out a role in a Dallas secondary that badly needs help.
Brad Kaaya - QB - Free Agent
Lions waived QB Brad Kaaya.
A sixth-round rookie out of Miami, Kaaya completed 24-of-40 passes for 293 yards with three touchdowns and one interception during the preseason. He should catch on elsewhere, at least as a practice-squadder. Jake Rudock will open as Detroit's No. 2 behind starter Matthew Stafford.
Sean Spence - LB - Free Agent
Colts released ILB Sean Spence.
Spence was brought in to compete for a starting job at inside linebacker but lost out to Anthony Walker and Edwin Jackson. The 27-year-old was lousy as a run-stopper last year but was strong in pass coverage. He should resurface quickly.
