NFL Union Leader: Lockout Likely

Didn't the players already sign something to prevent a lockout regardless? EPSN had reported it a while back.

don't believe too much of anything heard out of either side right now...it's all just threats and negotiation tactics.

That would be disappointing if it did happen. I wonder if the NFL would take a hit in popularity.

I know a lot of people only watch high school and college football because they "play for the love of the game." If the players and owners can't come to an agreement more people will feel that way.

The NFLPA voted to decertify, which would allow the players to file a lawsuit for an illegal lockout. The NFL likely would file a countersuit, alleging that the decertification is a sham because the NFLPA would plan to re-form, like it did the last time it decertified.

In short ... this could get ugly.

Sounds bad.
Nothing sickens the fans more than billionaires fighting with multi millionaires over money. How nice. Meanwhile 25 percent of the country had a late mortgage payment last year.
How nice.

The NFL will take a hit. You will not find any sympathy for either side during a recession.

The College game is already gaining ground and if they ever create a real national champion (playoffs plus the bowls) it will explode. Next year would be the perfect time for the college game to take over...but they won't because people like the Ohio State president exist.

Adam, just curious. In your opinion do you think a lock out is looming or do you think something will get worked out even if it's only short term to allow them more time to negotiate?

Too bad owners like Jerry Richardson think lining their pockets more important than the product on the field. Hope the union decertifies and either some judge or congress shoves it right down the owners throats.

I am so tired of the posturing ! (sp?)

I was encouraged in the progress made this week in the labor talks. Both sides agreed things moved forward and hopefully this will continue. The absolute last thing any of us wants to see is this thing coming down to the last day.

I wonder if Jerry is already lining up replacement players for next season?

A late mrtgage payment? That doesn't sum up how serious the economy is very well. How many families had to walk away from their homes in this country and foreclose? Bankruptsy, lost jobs.... I bet they all wished they had just missed one payment last year.

Hopefully they work it out, but I'm sure it'll be at the last minute if they do. Things I would like to see changed:

1. Some type of effective rookie salary cap, similar to NBA perhaps.
2. Some sort of cap discount for your own drafted players. Perhaps, 90% of your own drafted player contract count against the cap, verses signing someone elses draft pick in free agency counting 110% against the cap.

In general some sort of method that doesn't restrict free agency, but gives the home team a little bit of an advantage in drafting well.

3. Major give to the players to get most of what the owner wants is a higher salary floor. Perhaps raise the current % slightly, but require a team to have a increasing higher floor. Allows a rebuilding team, but prevents a team for low balling salary year after year. Maybe even require every team to be within 10% of the ceiling one out of five years of the contract.

IMHO, it is a virtual lock that there's a lockout. BUT when I say "lockout" I mean the lockout starting on (I believe the date is) March 1st.

To me, the big question is whether or not they can get their heads out of their hindquarters before any regular season games are impacted.

They can't have replacement players since it is going to be a lockout and not a strike.

I expect it to get ugly; it has before. I am preparing myself to have to choose between watching the sham that is college ball or just quitting watching football completely and using my Sundays, etc. for more productive activity.
