ReutersThe NFL’s Competition Committee announced several proposed changes to the game-day rules and the league bylaws on a conference call with reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

The rules changes that are being proposed are:

1. Giving the authority to determine replay reviews to the replay official in the booth, not the referee on the field.

2. Modifying the horse-collar tackle rule to remove the exception for quarterbacks in the pocket, so that a quarterback in the pocket may not be yanked down by the back of his shoulder pads or inside collar of his jersey.

There is some good stuff on tap for discussion. Please please please take all replay to the booth. There will be some uproar about modifying overtime for the regular season, but I'm good with it. Tweaking the injured reserve rule is long overdue in my opinion.

Automatically reviewing turnovers via instant replay, just as scoring plays are automatically reviewed.

I like that, if your out of challenges you would hate to lose the ball on a missed turnover call and vise versa of not getting the turn over because you don't have the challege to do so.

Hell get rid of the challeges :laugh2:

I like the OT rule where a FG can't win it on the opening drive.

I do too. When two teams have fought to a standstill through four quarters, I want to see each team have enough time to overpower the other. While dramatic, field goals do not always reflect that in the end.

2. Modifying the horse-collar tackle rule to remove the exception for quarterbacks in the pocket, so that a quarterback in the pocket may not be yanked down by the back of his shoulder pads or inside collar of his jersey.

I don't like this at all...what if the defender is falling to the ground and the only way to make the sack is to grab the QB by the collar? Are we going to penalize the defender for making the best play giving the circumstances? I understand if its a blatent horsecollar when another play could have been made but i would love to see the discussion on that

3. Changing overtime so that the postseason rule will be used in the regular season as well, and no regular-season games will be ended on a field goal on the first possession of overtime.

Just go to college overtime rules and be done with it college overtime is much more fun to watch than NFL overtime

6. Expanding the defenseless player rule to protect defensive players on crackback blocks, making it illegal to hit them in the head or neck area.

why? head or neck area? all that means is when i make a crackback block and hit the defender in the chest and his head moves a flinch they can call me for a 15 yard penalty?

7. Automatically reviewing turnovers via instant replay, just as scoring plays are automatically reviewed.

what do you have challenges for?

I don't even know what to say anymore. The concept of limiting contact in a contact sport is so baffling to me that I have to force myself to stop thinking about it or my head would explode.

Also, the NFL needs to go to college overtime rules and move the starting LOS back from the 25 to the 40 or 50. Each team gets a possession and if it's still tied after 2 OTs you begin requiring teams go for two. It creates much more excitement and allows for more scoring which appeals to many fans.

This one will effect us every season...

The league also considered the following bylaws:

1. Modifying the roster rules for teams that play on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

What modifications?

The expansion of the horse collar rule is pretty much going to eliminate 75% of sacks... I hate that. The horse collar rule came about because ripping a player down and back while he is running full bore the other way is bound to cause serious injury. A stand still, or pretty much so, QB in the pocket is rarely gonna be injured more than a tackle sack. This is garbage.

Full time refs?
We can only dream. :(

There is something strange about any professional sports league with billions in revenue unwilling to hire full-time refs.

The NFL broke the old ref union. They don't want to deal with a professional union. They are willing to put up with the many issues of part time refs for the ability/control it gives the NFL.

College overtime rules suck!

Or I could tell you what I really think of it.....

...with some of those issues being a lack of referees worthy of officiating at the professional level.

Only one I disagree with.
