NFL will again revisit most unfair rule in the game

On Thursday night, Washington running back Matt Jones fumbled while approaching the goal line. The ball bounced into the end zone and out of the end zone, unrecovered.

By rule, the Giants got possession at their own 20. Even though they failed to secure possession of the ball before it when out of bounds.

It’s the most unfair rule in the game. If the ball had fallen out of bounds before the end zone, Washington would have retained possession at the spot of the fumble. An extra bounce or two has a dramatic, and arbitrary, impact on the situation, for no good reason.

Been that way for a long time, considered touch back. what are they to do call it a TD reward the team who fumbled it or give them the chance to get the ball right back. it is true if they fumble and it goes out at the 1 great break for them they get it at the 1 but out of the endzone bad break then again don't fumble and it is not an issue. lol

As usual the "fixes" sound a lot worse than the problem.

There is only so much room in the endzone. That is why the Defense gets the benefit of the doubt, they may not even get a chance to recover it in only 10 yards.

But the offense should not be rewarded in any way for a mistake.

No one says a word when the offense fumbles in their end zone it goes out of bounds for a safety for the defense. If anything, treat a fumble in opponent's end zone like a touchback. The offense keeps possession, but spot the ball on the 20.

Then how about we just start fumbling in the endzone on purpose to get the ball at the 20.

I guess people still dont understand what I am saying. Why would anyone want to fumble going in for a TD to spot the ball 20 yards further away?

I'm not talking about fumbling on your own goal line, I'm talking about fumbling on the opponents gosl line.

Why should you keep the ball?

While there at it, maybe they can revisit the stupid "ground caused the fumble" and "WR didn't have complete possession" fumble rules as well.

You drop the ball, you fumble it. Period.

I could see a case made for fumbles from outside the endzone return to the spot of the fumble at the scoring endzone and the 1 yard line for your own endzone if the ball is not recovered by the opposing team. Why should the opposing team be rewarded with possession if they never have it? In both cases they are awarding possession to the defense without any fair reason to do so.

If you fumble from inside your own endzone and it goes out of bounds then that would still be a safety to avoid intentional fumbles.

Why not treat it just like any other fumble that goes out of bounds? If it's backwards, it goes where it went out. If forward, it goes back to where it was fumbled. No reason for special rules.

It has been the rule for a long time, I don't see any reason to change it. Offense gets the benefit if they fumble out of bounds and results in a 1st down.

Offense has enough rules that favor them. lol How about giving defense a break for a change and leave the rule alone.

But is being the rule a long time a good enough reason for it to stay as a rule? I don't think so. I don't value traditions that are only kept for tradition's sake.

If the offense makes a 30 yard play downfield and then fumbles it out of bounds at the 10 yard line. They still get the ball, they still had a big play. It is silly to change the rule for the end zone IMO. Treat it exactly like any other situation.

The opposing team isn't awarded possession in the case where it goes out at the back of your own end zone. Fumbles that go out of bounds backwards are marked down where they go out of bounds in all situations. If it does this in your own end zone, then you are down in the end zone, and it's a safety. If the other team was awarded possession, it would be a TD in that case.

I disagree, offense blows it and losing the ball in the endzone it should be a turnover. Where would you have the offense get the ball 1 yard line? I don't see why the offense should get off the hook

Wherever they fumbled the ball. Just like every other situation. Why should they "get off the hook" in every other case? If they fumble the ball out of bounds at their own 5 yard line, why don't you say they blew it and give the ball to the defense? They keep the ball in that situation and can march down the field and score.

Just the way the rule has always worked. Sorry I get tired of the yearly changing of the rules. There is nothing wrong with the game, leave the rules alone. Just 1 season I would love it if there was no changing of the rules yet every dang year these idiots sit around and figure new ways to screw this game up. Leave it alone for goodness sake

I think there are some rules that could/should be changed. This is one I never cared for, and would have no problem with a reasonable change (one rule for all fumbles, regardless of where). However, I agree that a lot of the changes they do make are unnecessary and only make things worse (they've absolutely destroyed the catch process).

I dunno. If you fumble from the field of play towards the end zone and it goes out of bounds out of the end zone, I think you should maintain possession and get it at the 1 yard line.

No way. The rule works.

Offenses will take advantage if the rule is changed.
Coach: If you can't score, just "accidentally" fumble the ball thru the back of the endzone. ..... Need that 1st and goal at the one. So we can run the clock out. Don't want to give the other team an opportunity to score.

The rule works.

A touchback has always gave possession of the ball to the endzone owner. I see no reason to change it. Don't fumble in or near the endzone.

Besides, there are reasons not to change it. A team could easily in a sense, throw the ball out of the back of the endzone which would give them the ball at the 1? No.

At the very least, if you fumble it in/out of the endzone, and you want the offense to maintain possession, they should get the ball back at the 20 with loss of down. hah then they may have 3rd and 20 for fumbling haha.

Personally, a touchback should be a touchback. No changes to the rule.
