NFLPA hoping for “less punitive” approach to recreational marijuana

I realize there are many hardliners around here, of whom I respect their opinion, that wouldn't agree with this. On the other hand, I for one would like to see some logic brought to this archaic rule and its punishment. In Gregory's case, and others around the league, I strongly believe the punishment does not fit the "crime". Btw, I don't smoke pot.

When it comes to marijuana, the NFL continues to be trapped in the days of Reefer Madness. The NFL Players Association hopes to change that.

In a meeting with Washington Post reporters and editors, NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said the union is preparing a proposal to make the substance-abuse policy “less punitive” when it comes to recreational marijuana use. If approved by the NFLPA’s board of player representatives, the proposal will be presented to the NFL.

It's stupid. Check randomly, and then check anybody who fails a test monthly until they're clean for a year. 4 week suspensions for a failed test, no escalations. If you smoke yourself out of enough games, it hurts you in your next contract. If the team doesn't want to carry your dead weight, they cut you. Otherwise, it's pretty much pay-as-you-go with the violations.

Or there are a dozen other better ways to solve it. Really, it's a simple problem.

They'll change the rule just as he's eligible for free agency...in approx. 8 years because he is always suspended and can't accrue any seasons off of his contract.

The best solution for all concerned is to let the Clubs handle the testing and discipline in house. Get Goodell and friends completely out of the testing business. It is simply not worth all the bad publicity and damage done to Players..who are, in fact, the Leagues biggest asset. The present system makes absolutely no logical sense, since there is no legal reason to persue it.

Test for ped's (however ineffective those tests may be)

Everything else, including dwi's, assaults, murders, etc, leave for the courts. If a player is available to play and isn't stupid enough to fail a test for roids, let the team decide whether he plays.
