Hey -

Does anybody have any experience dining in NYC and can recommend a nice place to take someone? Not from the city but am going to be there on Thursday. Thanks!

I always enjoy Nick and Stef's Steakhouse. It's attached to Madison Square Garden but accessible from the street. Anytime we go to a concert at The Garden we make it a point to eat there before the show.

A lot of it depends on what cuisine and how much money you want to spend.

For example, on 44th Street in midtown, there are a number of restaurants that participate in a prix fix menu on Wednesdays that keeps the prices reasonable. You can literally get any cuisine that you want.

There are a couple of good French places off of 51st and 8th Avenue - Tou va Bien and Rene Pujol - good food, prices not completely out of control. There are the typical big steakhouses throughout - Gallaghers, Smith and Wollensky, etc.

Depending on how formal you want, if you like barbecue, Virgil's is great - it's on 44th street off of Broadway.

You can find a good restaurant all over the place there.

Let's put it this way, a bad restaurant would never make it in New York City.

Not true. Go to all the touristy spots and there is one ever 50 feet.

What type of restaurant are you looking for? If it exists, it exists in NYC. (though sometimes regional food is not as good as the real thing)

If you're willing to spend some money the Capital Grille will not disappoint.

I would stay away from the celebrity chef places, way overpriced in most cases and not worth it. Now, if we are talking Italian food.........head down to Little Italy and look for a place called Peasant. I have no idea exactly where it is but google it. Probably the best authentic food I have had since being in Italy itself.

Ok, if you want to experience the downtown aspect with some Mexican.......go to Chevy's on W42nd. Great place to people watch and they make their own tortillas in the middle of the place. I forgot to mention a huge full-bar with many tequilas. My first trip to NY, the wife dragged me there and we met Mariah Carey.

My experience: very expensive. Adequate at best. It's clear where they want to go... But it was more expensive than good/great.

But I'm a fair man... I'll give them another shot. To be sure.

Wow! It happened to me. Bobby Flay in atlantic city. Got totally ripped off on a steak.... I know steak.... I know it well. I got a regular, common tasting steak for a outrageous price. I was pissed but we were enjoying the time there,.. So I let it go. Never again.
