Way to show your appreciation to the BCS selection committee with a hard fought close game.

West Virginia Players were on a mission. They were focused and they were mad.

During the Sugar Bowl game one of the announcers said something along the lines of...The state of Virginia is well represented in the BCS bowl games this year with Virginia Tech and West Virginia. The next day mort tweets something about the game and says Western Virginia. It irritates the players, the university and the WV residents when people continue to say and think that we are just part of Virginia...too bad we started our own state in 1863.

Then they players also heard the talking heads of ESPN and others saying that Clemson was going to win and a few of them said it would not be close that Clemson was going to win BIG. Espn put up a poll and 73% of the country said Clemson would win...that was just more motivation.

It almost mirrored what happen a few years ago when we were getting ready to play Oklahoma in the Fiesta bowl and the talking heads were predicting Oklahoma would put up big numbers against WVU and the poll ESPN put up had 83% of the country predicting an Oklahoma win.

That just motivates the team and university to go out there and show ESPN and the country how good we are and that we deserve more respect than what is given to us. They sometimes preach the mantra respect is earned and you have to go out there and earn it on the national stage.

Before the game they had Coach Lou and Mark Mays do their little commentary where one picks one team and the other does the other team. Of course Mark May is going to go with Clemson as he is a former Pitt player and that is a natural rivalry. But Coach Lou kind of went off and said that WVU does not get the respect they deserve and WV feels they get disrespected as well...of course Lou is from WV so that helps.:D

Either way it was WVU being tired of being overlooked and disrespected and going out there and putting a beating on the other team to get the respect they deserve.

I saw a great tweet this morning. It said something along the lines of...For all of those confused about where WV is, just look and you will find them in the Endzone.:laugh2:

Another kind of funny thing. The ACC had it's chance to take WVU but they did not want us. Too bad as their bcs bowl record is so terrible they could have used a team like WVU to give them a win in BCS bowls. Some time ago someone said that the ACC decided to raid the Big East garage and got a couple of sedans but left the Ferrari. :laugh2:

It had to put a smile on the face of Big 12 members knowing they got a good team and it had to just further irritate the Big East Commish.

I got to admit, with Casteel rumored on his way here to Arizona to be the DC for Rich Rodriguez, I was really intent on this game. At first, Clemson was scoring kind of fast. 17 points in the 1st quarter. I wasn't all that impressed. But when the flood gates opened in the 2nd quarter, from then on their Defense did a nice job.

At least Clemson got a plane ride to Miami and got to stay in a fancy hotel.

Not one of his best seasons for defense this year. But he had to deal with losing out on a great NT that got drafted by the skins. Don't know who CN did with the skins this season but he was a very big part of that three man line and was greatly missed.

He also had to deal with losing some players in the secondary and starting a lot of young guys.

They pretty much shut out clemson in the second half. They allowed 12 points in the second half but mostly in garbage time.

I thought at the beginning it was going to be a situation of whoever has the ball last wins.

I liked reading about some of the players talking about the plan to flood the secondary and not only confuse but annoy Boyd because they knew that it would cause him to make mistakes.

MOST of the game they only rushed their standard three man d line and that was why they did not get as many sacks but even with that they still did get pressure on Boyd on occasion.

If you caught the very end of the game you seen how much the players love and respect Casteel as not only did they give a gatorade bath to the HC but also DC Casteel. They did this even knowing that chances are he is going to another school. They love and respect him because he deserves it as a good coach and a good character type of person.

Nothing but respect for the man.

Well my team (Tech) just got shoved further down into the basement of the Big 12, WV played great and was fun to watch.

Did I read that this was a BCS bowl? That's not right is it?

Wow, werent they two low rank teams? That seems strange they would be playing in a BCS game. Wasn't WV ranked 23rd and Clemson 15th?

I think that is only fair for any school or football program. I don't want anything that we have not earned, but if WV does something big, give them the credit they deserve.

I think, without looking to verify, WVU has won 3 BCS bowl games in the last 6 years. (Fiesta, Sugar, Orange)

I think only 3 other schools have won 3 BCS bowls. Pretty good company.

Give WV credit for playing good football on a national stage.

I think we have been in 10 or 11 straight bowl games.

These aren't my opinion, these are facts.

Congratulations to Dana Holgorsen and his kids.

Yes and the reason is the system that determines the bowl games

All BCS conferences except the Big East have contracts for their champions to participate in specific BCS bowl games. Unless their champion is involved in the BCS National Championship game, the conference tie-ins are:

Rose Bowl – Big Ten champion vs. Pac-12 champion
Fiesta Bowl – Big 12 champion vs. at large
Orange Bowl – ACC champion vs. at large
Sugar Bowl – SEC champion vs. at large
The Big East champion takes one of the remaining spots

Conference champions.

I don't think 15th is very low.

15th in the nation is pretty good.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I thought you had to be in the top 8 in the poll to get a BCS bowl.

I haven't followed this stuff too close, thus my dumb q's and statements, because I've lost interest. The bowl games are meaningless and I think its incredibly stupid they cant create a playoff. The more the better I say.

The champion of a BCS conference[4] (ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC) is guaranteed an automatic BCS bowl bid.

Due to the "Notre Dame rule",[5] independent Notre Dame receives an automatic berth if it finishes in the top eight.

The highest-ranked champion of a non-BCS conference will receive an automatic berth if:
It is ranked in the top 12, or
Ranked in the top 16 and higher than at least one BCS conference champion.

You're welcome. I forgot the part about at-large bids:

After the automatic berths have been granted, the remaining berths, known as "at-large" berths, are filled from a pool of teams who are ranked in the top 14 and have at least nine wins. The actual teams that are chosen for the at-large berths are determined by the individual bowl committees

I've been saying it for several years now, but Dana Holgorson is a football genius. A lot of guys run wide open "spread" offenses, but he took the spread concept and turned it int something that works against everybody including good defenses. He implements all normal aspects of that offense AND has success with both a power running game and vertical passing game, things dink and dunk spread offenses traditionally lack. You can't simply shut it down with speed on defense like you could say a Mike Leach offense.

He'll be the head coach at a top 5 national program one day and will succeed there. As for his continued success at West Virginia, he still needs to get more athletes on defense and get away from the 3-3-5 to win big in the Big XII. Otherwise, he'll be losing games 52-49.

When's the last time you saw an SEC team get 70 hung on them, much less an SEC bowl team?

I will say it again. The SEC is over rated this year. The Big 12 was the better conference IMO.

Clemson is in the ACC, and both participants in the national title game are from the SEC with two of the truly great defenses in history.

Also, the Big XII was very much down this year. OU and Missouri were average by their standards, A&M, Tech and Texas all sucked, Kansas State is just a "meh" team with great coaching and Kansas was maybe the worst BCS conference team in history this season. Only OSU and Baylor had good seasons by program specific standards, and Baylor got their teeth kicked in twice because their defense is so awful. How was the Big XII better this year?
