The Cowboys are counting on Alan Ball to be the team’s free safety this season. So it made sense for Ball to at least sign his contract.

The fourth-year defensive back signed his exclusive rights tender Wednesday morning of $545,000 for this 2010 season.

Ball is the top candidate to win the starting free safety job, replacing Ken Hamlin who was released last month. Hamlin is expected to visit the Bengals this week.
.....

I just made a post that presumed Alan Ball as back up corner and 3rd FS on the depth chart.

Lord help us.

I feel comfortable with Ball working in the secondary with Sensabaugh this coming season. I certainly hope Akwasi can catch on quickly and become a factor in the secondary this season but if we have to go with Ball I feel confident he can do the job

I think we're in a good position. Ball was solid last year filling in for Ken Hamlin. If Mike Hamlin, AOA or a vet like Otogwe/sharper do a good job, we can put ball back at 4th cb. if not, the FS spot is his.

They are counting on Ball but you know they are going to take a long hard look at Hamlin as well.

As they should. I think it will come down to Ball and Hamlin competing for the job and I'm pulling for both guys to do well during the competition. At this stage I would pencil in Ball as the starter only because he has some experience but clearly not enough to say it is his job without question.

That's probably around 1/6th - 1/8th of the contract Sharper is looking for. From a risk standpoint, it just makes more sense to stick with Ball.

It will be interesting to see what they think of Ball, how quickly they come to a comfort level of him as the starter. He played pretty well at times last season. He could get even better with more time as the starter through training camp etc.

Ball played some FS last year and in his limited time, I liked him more than Hamlin there.
