Jets to audition PK Kris Brown, could boot FolkNovember, 29, 2010Nov 2911:57PM ETEmail Print CommentsBy Rich CiminiConcerned by Nick Folk?srecent downturn, the New York Jets are checking into available kickers, ESPNNewYork.com has learned. On Tuesday, they're scheduled to work out veteran free agent Kris Brown, according to a league source. Folk, who played a major role in two of the Jets? first six wins, has missed five of his last 10 field-goal attempts. In last Thursday night?s win over the Cincinnati Bengals, he was unsuccessful from 44 yards, almost missed an extra point (he got a good bounce off the upright) and came up short on three kickoffs. The Jets, preparing for next Monday night?s first-place showdown against the New England Patriots, aren't a stand-pat team under GM Mike Tannenbaumand Rex Ryan. If they sense a problem, they will try to fix it. Brown, 33, was cut Nov. 23 by the San Diego Chargers, for whom he kicked in three games. He made four of five field goals. He has played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans in a 12-year career, but lost his job in Houston in the preseason to Neil Rackers. Browns is a 77-percent career kicker on field goals. It?s unclear if the Jets are preparing to replace Folk or simply formulating a contingency plan in the event that he continues to struggle. If they keep Folk, he will be under intense pressure Monday night, knowing that his job is on the line -- as well as possibly the division title. Ryan admitted Monday that he?s ?definitely concerned? by Folk, who suffered a late-season collapse last year with the Dallas Cowboys -- a decline that earned a pink slip. ?When you miss the field goal, that?s one thing,? Ryan said on his weekly spot with Michael Kay on 1050 ESPN Radio. ?But when he hit the upright on the extra point, it?s like, ?Nick, come on, you can kick it left-footed and kick it through there.? ?Sometimes you?re going to have some ups and downs in a year, but that was a concern to me. And his kickoffs. This was a guy who has been booming his ki

We cut the guy for poor performance.. now another team is cutting him again for that reason, and possibly lack of mental focus as well.. now you want to sign him back?

:(

Do you mean second chance with dallas or a 3rd chance with the NFL as he has been with us and failed and now the jets?

Oh the rueage that was going on with him and the jets and now they are looking to replace him is comical.

A good question is why aren't we looking at Kris Brown?

because we have the "luxury" of developing Buehler at this point

In the last three games Folk has attempted eleven FGs. He has made six. Thats a 54% success rate.

Against Cleveland:
  • 27 yards: Good
  • 48 yards: No Good
  • 24 yards: No Good
  • 25 yards: Good
  • 47 yards: No Good

Against Houston:
  • 37 yards: Good
  • 33 yards: Good
  • 53 yards: No Good

Against Cincinnati:
  • 27 yards: Good
  • 44 yards: No Good

He has had four kicks from 40+ and missed every single one of them. He also missed a chip-shot 24 yard FG. Umm. No thanks.

Hold on, I'm confused....

A few weeks ago I was told by board "experts" that we were to rue letting Folk get away. Now he went bad again and we no longer should rue him?

I'm so confused.

Please let me know. To Rue or Not to Rue? That is my question.

Wonder where all the people are that thought we got rid of Folk too soon are at now? Come out come out wherever....

Daddy hugs mommy in a "special" way and nine months later you have a little brother. Not that difficult.

Even if he was available, Jerry wouldn't bring him back.

Same reason why we didn't bring back Carp despite us not having an adequate nickle linebacker.

Pride.

Strange time to be suggesting this. Despite missing (barely) the 59-yarder at the end, Thanksgiving might have been Buehler's best day as a Cowboy. He boomed all his kickoffs the way that he used to - out of five kicks, four were touchbacks and the 5th was returned only to the 19. Plus, he made two FGs, one of them a 53-yarder.

Overall, Buehler's at 72% on FGs, Folk's at 73%. But from 40+, the numbers are 67% and 44%.

I'm ok with Buehler, BUT only if he keeps booting kickoffs the way he did Thursday. Either way, I have no interest in Folk at all.

I was one. But I also said we should have put him on IR not just flat out cut him.

maybe we can get Shaun Suisham, he just went 4-4 from 40+ yards including the ot winner for the Steelers.

At this point we should stay with Buehler. I thought Thursday was his best performance of the season. Let's see if he can get on a roll the last 5 weeks and cement the job.

Hellz No. Have you guys WATCHED him kick? We made the right decision, he's lost it.

Or it could be because both those guys are terrible. Folk hasn't hit a FG over 40 yards in a month and it's pride that would keep us from bringing him back? Last time I checked Buehler hit from 50 and barely missed a 59 yarder on Sunday. Half the teams in the league would take Buehler off our hands in an instant.

Also, Carp is so terrible that not only have 2 other teams cut him, but now he's a special teamer on the skeezy Lions. He. is. terrible.

Maybe Folk cna use the same coaching support that Buehler is getting from Boniol? The difference is that Folk once proved that he can kick FGs in this league with no coaching support - something Buehler has yet to prove with coaching support.

So to answer the original question - Yes, I would bring Folk back and have him spend time with Boniol and also give him a chance on kickoffs. I wold keep Buehler too. Then during next training camp I would open the competition to both of them to compete fro the job of starting GG/Kickoff kicking spcialist.

I guess that is the same pride that kept us from cutting the former 1st round pick in the first place.
