I would just be happy if he would put more into the endzone. Thirty-three percent is good and all, but he is also taking a roster spot to do one thing.

And he is doing it very well. It has helped the coverage teams. Dallas is in the top 5 in kick coverage this season.

Most importantly, the laces are an irregular surface. Imagine putting laces like that on a basketball, then expecting to be able to dribble it as well as you would a regular basketball. Whenever the laces hit the floor, it would bounce at an odd angle. It's the same way coming off the kicker's foot -- an irregular surface makes it far more difficult to be accurate.

Also, there's not as much "give" in the ball when you kick the laces, which affects the distance you can kick it.

I think I remember reading in the preseason about Ladouceur being so good long snapping the ball that he would get in back to McBriar with the laces already turned the right direction.

I think it's possible that McBriar wasn't expecting to have to spin the ball, so the laces got left facing Folk.

I agree that the effect of hitting the laces can cause the ball to come off the foot at the wrong angle, and the attempt by Folk certainly seemed to do that, but there is also the psychological angle. The kicker can see the laces facing him, and in that split-second, it can throw off a motion that has to be ever so precise.

Brad Johnson was a very good holder, McBriar is not. I was hoping that they would give Buehler a run at place holds, but apparently they did not.

There was also a bit of a cross wind on that kick.

If you fair catch the ball, you're given the opportunity for a free, uncontested place kick or drop-kick at the uprights for points.

John Madden loves the rule, and just about any time a punt was fair caught around midfield he'd him and haw about it.
