LDE: Marcus Spears
NT: Jay Ratliff replaces Jason Ferguson
RDE: Jason Hatcher replaces Chris Canty

LOLB: DeMarcus Ware
LILB: Bobby Carpenter replaces Bradie James
RILB: Kevin Burnett replaces Akin Ayodele
ROLB: Anthony Spencer

LCB: Terrence Newman
FS: Ken Hamlin center-field
SS: Roy Williams near LOS
RCB: Anthony Henry

anybody think that's how it will play out? and is anyone excited looking at that lineup rushing the passer? I am

and is anyone else excited about Roy Williams in an aggressive defense, where he's moving forward instead of all the way backwards?

don't know if we will go to a 4-man line in the nickel, but if we do:

LDE: Jason Hatcher
NT: Jay Ratliff
DT: Marcus Spears
RDE: Anthony Spencer

WLB: Roy Williams
MLB: Kevin Burnett
SLB: DeMarcus Ware

LCB: Terrence Newman
FS: Pat Watkins
SS: Ken Hamlin
RCB: Anthony Henry

there are so many possibilities, anyone think of anything else?

They will go to a 4-3 nickel. One of the packages they were using looked like this, its more for pass situations:

RE DeMarcus Ware
RT Chris Canty
LT Jason Hatcher
LE Anthony Spencer

WLB Kevin Burnett
SLB Roy Williams

slot Aaron Glenn/Terence Newman
RCB Anthony Henry
FS Pat Watkins
SS Ken Hamlin
LCB Terence Newman/Aaron Glenn

Good analysis. I think you meant to put Watkins at FS and Hamlin at SS for your 4-man Nickel front. I put in parenthesis other possibilities. Based on Canty's impressive OTA's (Yes, I know they are OTA's), I wouldn't be surprised to see Canty replace Spears on the nickel if he shows more in training camp and preseason. And I noticed Greg Ellis is non-existent on both lists. I think that's a good thing due to how much talent this defense really has. Ellis will be a key part of pressuring the QB, and I can see him splitting time with Spencer on the Nickel to keep both players fresh.

me either, but Spears was another player, along w/ Hatcher who Wade lauded for their practices

I'm not sure how Ellis is going to be physically, but I'm sure we're going to see him on quite a few defensive plays

That's a dime package. Wade uses it a lot. Move Roy to Watkins' spot and stick in Carpenter and that's our nickel.

I understand why you guys left Ellis out now. I think he'll be the starter game 1. I also think we'll see Ellis, Spencer, Ware and maybe Carpenter in there at the same time. And more than just a little although I don't know who will be the fourth.

Can't write Akin off. I sure hope all our LBs play light's out. I hpe finding time for them all is a problem.

Absolutely.

Spencer --- Ellis --- Hatcher --- Ware
-----Carpenter ----- Burnett/Ayodele

Third and long, that's your look. Third and 6 or shorter and we'll bulk up in the middle.

That looks good. I think we'll see Ellis as a LB in there with Ware and Spencer at the same time. Say Hatcher, Fergy and Canty on the line with Ellis, Ware, Spencer and Akin/Carpenter. Just one true MLB. Not saying this is a nickel or dime defense although it certainly would be more of a passing defense. JMO. But Wade did say it would happen at times. Don't have a link but I'm more than 80% sure he said it.

Oh yeah, I think there'll be some of that. Not as much as some people think, but there should be some different packages. I've watched a few old Chargers games and Wade isn't has "exotic" as some people are thinking. You'll see the overwhelming majority of first and second downs with just our straight 3-4 lineup.

I believe that will hold up. I think Ellis has a better shot at being a starter right now. Spencer is just a rookie who has never played a down in the NFL and is making a position move. If he plays well enough to beat Ellis out I'll be happier than a hog in a wallow.

ON the blitz the cowboys and desperados report this past sunday night, Mickey spanola broke down film of the last mini camp.

He broke down a nickel set that was similarto the first personnel grouping you have, with watkins at ss. Pretty cool to see roy at the ilb spot. It was a 4 man line though.

Then showed some 3-4 with hatcher playing left end stunted around ratliff and came running in wide open ready to hammer brad johnson.

He did some more also, hopefully they will put it up on DC.com.

I don't know why people insist on calling it a "4-3" nickel. I've even seen Dallas sports writers do this. A 4 man line doesn't mean "4-3". "4-3" implies 4 down linemen and 3 linebackers. 4 down linemen, 2 linebackers and 5 DBs is a nickel defense and has nothing to do with a base "4-3" defense.

Well, according to the original post, this is a very special nickel that only has 4 DBs.

Kinda like a tricycle with two wheels.

I am excited to see this nickle defense.

Ware and Spencer off the edges with Hatcher and Ratliff inside. That's a lot of quickness/athleticism/and should be a substantial pass rush from those 4. With Burnett and Carpenter at LB in that defense, they can cover, have athleticism and speed/quickness.

Combine that with Williams, Hamlin, Newman, Henry, and Glenn....and we should have a good nickle defense.

Of course, I also thought this/believed this last year....so maybe I am just looking for anything positive. But I am really excited to see what kind of pressure those 4 can get on the DL.
