49ers signed S Michael Lewis to an undisclosed contract.
San Francisco has been looking for someone to compete with free safety Keith Lewis, but Michael is a strong safety. We'll have to see where Lewis fits into the Niners' plans. He played some outside linebacker in Philly.

Has anyone noticed how SF has steadily been making good moves to get back into contention? Talent wise, they are doing a good job. I think they took a step backward on offene when Norv left.

thats IF in year 7 they dont want to pay 35.5 million.. and in 7 years 35.5 million might be a bargain.

sorry, I havent seen that

signing Clements to that outrageous deal and adding a another teams backup safety who's so lousy he was benched dont qualify as "making good moves to get back into contention"

Forget the years and total and look at the signing bonus. That's what's beyond ridiculous.

no its 22 mil guaranteed over the first 6 yrs of the deal. and 44.5 mil in the first 6 yrs overall. so that makes him have a 35.5 mil base salary in yr 7. sort of like what mcnair had. when he had that 50 mil base

dblair, you do know Michael Lewis was benched after he turned down a contract extension by the Eagles, correct? Surely after watching the Eagles, you know that Sean Considine wasn't in the same ballpark as Lewis.

no, he was benched because he blows...if you would have actually watched him or read the news, you'd know that...

Jim Johnson thought he was sorry in coverage, and he is

I may be in the minority here, but I'm looking forward to seeing the Niners get good again. It just doesn't seem right having them be so bad.

M Lewis was offered a contract after the 2004 season, not last year. His play declined the last couple years and was benched last year, than moved to linebacker on passing downs. Considine covered much better than Lewis, he just can't tackle and sucks in run support.

M Lewis needs to bulk up and play linebacker. He's finished at safety.

michael lewis has 10 mil guaranteed in his deal
On the same day that the San Francisco 49ers handed out more than $20 million in guaranteed money to cornerback Nate Clements, the team coughed up $10 million in guaranteed money to safety Michael Lewis.

Nancy Gay of the San Francisco Chronicle reports on the guaranteed money, and observes that Lewis hauled in this payday despite being benched during the 2007 season.

I'm guessing a Philly news report told you this, correct?

You do know that Philly's defense tailed off statistically after Lewis was benched, in both run and pass, correct?

You do also know that most of this came about after he was not offered an extension. Notice how in the past, Johnson had Lewis turned into one of the better safeties in the NFC, but once it became clear he wasn't returning, the mud slinging began.

Also, for the person who said Lewis was not offered a contract extension this season, you are wrong. I posted an article during Senior Bowl week I had found about Lewis' agent discussing this.

Dude you aren't even close to right. Again, he was offered a contract when they signed Sheppard, and Brown, then again that off season before 2005. 2 years ago.

Need more proof he stunk? Check common opponents last year where Lewis played, then Considine.

Games Lewis Started.
Passing yards.
against Giants 371
against Saints 275
against Dallas 223

Games Considine started.
Passing yards
against Dallas 142
against Giants 282
against Saints 243
against Giants 161

There was a considerable improvement in Philly's pass defense when Lewis was benched. Where they declined was in run defense where Lewis excelled.
