Afew points about an uncapped season.
1. Final 8 teams will not be able to sign a free agent unless they lose one.
2. FAs coming off their rookie contracts will become RFA rather then UFA.
3. Teams will have two tags instead of 1.

This will cut down the FA pool A LOT!!!! No we may not be able to sign some FAs BUT!
1. We can sign our players to contracts without the worries of a cap. (We could front load a lot of the big contracts that way we dont take huge hits from our top tier players when a new agreement is reached.)
2. We can get rid of some of the players who have large contracts but have been disappointments until this point in their careers.
3. We can sign players whom have been released from other teams to shed some room on their payroll.
4. Once one of our FAs are signed by another team we can then go after a FA.

Also lets not forget that we have lots of young talent on this team that we dont get to see a whole lot of as is. We still have this years draft as well dont forget.

no, we could not.

But we can sign any number of players cut by another team.

Are the top 8 teams limited on the amount the contract could be on players who are cut or are they fair game for a bidding war by all?

The way it was described yesterday was that for you to sign a FA you must lose a FA and can only sign one with "close" contract value. So, we lose a million dollar player we can't go out and sign Julius Peppers, for example, for 20 million.

That's fine. I dont envision us losing anyone that we cant replace with someone already on the roster or in the draft.

Players cut by other Teams? I thought we couldn't sign anyone unless we lost somebody?

I don't know if it will get to this point........a strike seems more likely by owners of poorer teams (ie Vikings, Jags, Bills, etc...) but that would mean no football for 2010 or 2011 season

No, the rule of 8 only applies to UFAs whose contract has expired. A player cut by his team for whatever reason will be available to everyone, including the top 8 teams. This really has become a non issue with me. The FA pool is looking bleak for next year and with no cap, Jerry can sign everyone and keep this team totally intact. I thinks thats the best plan. Just add to this current team through the draft and maybe the occasional free agent like Brooking. An older vet at a position of need that will bring leadership and work ethic to the lockeroom.

It sure looks that way at first glance but I think we will see more veterans cut than some people think. We all tend to think of the cap as only being the upper limit on spending but there is also a minimum team payroll that all teams have to meet. This minimum also goes away in the uncapped year, allowing tightwads like the Bidwells to dump veterans and use more rookies who have lower salaries.

I'm thinking we could see a bunch of 3rd and 4th year vets who are good players but not stars end up in the free agent pool that is available to everyone.

I couldn't see Dallas spending big bucks in F/A anyway...this team seems pretty set as far as the roster goes. Besides, don't most UFAs become restricted b/c of the uncapped year which should greatly dilute the talent pool this offseason. Let the Snyders of the NFL chase their tails and throw their $$$$ away!!

So why didn't Jerry wait on Ware? There's not gonna be a miraculous CBA agreement before March 5th, which would have moved Ware's UFA back 2 years, meaning we could have front loaded a huge portion of his bonus into the 2010 uncapped year?

Don't play with fire.

Thats the whole point of this being no big deal. Those players you speak of will be available for Dallas to sign with no restrictions if they chose to do so. The final 8 teams are not really going to be handicapped by this rule.

My bad, I didn't read that very last part of the last line. So we are on the same page.

Not true. Only the final four teams will have that restriction. The fifth through eighth teams will be restricted only in the value of the players they can sign, with some exceptions.

2. FAs coming off their rookie contracts will become RFA rather then UFA.

Not necessarily true. A player who was drafted in 2004 and signed a six-year contract (or whose contract voided after six seasons) will be an Unrestricted Free Agent.

There will not be a strike or work stoppage in my opinion. Too much money at stake for both the players and owners. Small market teams can least afford the loss of revenue.

Players who are cut are fair game to any team in the league AFAIK.

The restrictions on the final 8 and final 4 concern players who are UFA due to contracts expiring.
