No Contact Training Camp?

I'm only half serious, but I wonder how the team would perform in week 1 and beyond if they had an entire camp of no contact. These guys have been playing football their whole lives; they know how to block and tackle. Dont play starters in the preseason games. Just practice the mental part of the game. Would it be worth it to have fresh bodies and no preseason injuries? Is preseason contact overrated when you have a 16 game season to play?

You should probably rethink this thread.

This is a mans game.

Injuries are inevitable. No amount of cup-caking the players is going to prevent them. We've been getting hit harder and more often than is fair quite frankly, but there is really nothing you can do about it.

Yes, it's a man's game. And there are 16 of them that count. Preseason practices don't. The point is, over the long haul, is the team better off not hitting in camp?

Actually, they are better off by having more physical contact in OTAs/mini-camp and in training camp.

The current CBA limits the amount of contact that players can have as well as practices.

If you eliminate all physical aspects and just go full throttle week 1, you are going to end up worse than what is happening now.

If you want to point fingers, then look no further than what the NFLPA and the players bargained for in the last CBA negotiations. They wanted less physical practices and they got them but at the price of more injuries. Look around in the NFL and see how many more soft tissue injuries have cropped up because of the restrictions of the current CBA.

Training camp used to be 2 days with full pads, but now it's a complete joke.

I'm not sure there are any more preseason injuries now than a few years ago (before the current CBA). Would like to see the statistics. And you may be right that there would be injuries if full throttle in week 1, but I'm not sure that it would be any worse than what is happening now or last year in training camp & OTAs

There are some numbers in the article.

I laughed, at first, at what Chip Kelly was doing with the Eagles with his Sports Science Adviser. But in the end, he enjoyed a pretty healthy team and he really thinks outside of the box when it comes to what he is trying to do over there.

Kelly is on the right track, and the Cowboys better start looking into specific programs that will help eliminate injuries or they will continue to struggle with this issue.

I'd go a step further and cancel everything prior to week 1. Just tell the players to think about what they would do in a given situation and everything should be fine.
