Everyone wonders who we resign, Gallup? Wilson? Did Turner show enough to be the #3? Do we draft a #3, maybe a smaller, quicker slot receiver? Do we look for a thicker, sturdier, option in the Deebo mold?
I’d like to suggest a different option, more in line with McCarthy’s past.
Clearly, we will have a #3 WR for certain packages, whether that’s Wilson, Turner, Feboko, or a draft pick.
However, maybe it’s not a critical decision. Maybe we go away from the 3 WR set being our primary look.
What if Dallas goes into the off-season emphasizing the FA/draft acquisition of TE and FB, in addition to the obvious need at either LG or center or both. I’m fine with Jarwin as a receiving TE, but what if we emphasize a blocking TE who can also catch at least the short play-action passes. What if we pair that with a real FB, a guy who is an adept lead blocker, pass protector, and outlet receiver?
Would a true FB help Zeke and Pollard at the point of attack?
Would a true FB in pass protection allow greater use of Pollard in the passing game?
Would a true FB make the screen and double screen run smoother and be more effective with the TE blocking or getting in the seam beyond the screen?
Would a TE and RB underneath and as outlets while a FB blocks push Cooper and Lamb down the field more and make reads more clear for Dak?
I’m not suggesting abandoning the 3 wr sets, but being more physical underneath with the run game and passing to a RB like Pollard will likely bring a safety from the umbrella to the box and give Cooper and Lamb more room to operate. I feel like using so many wideouts all the time actually makes for tighter windows and less room for the WRs with more DBs spread out back there also cutting down on YAC.
Maybe I’m just old school and miss the truly talented FBs like Walt Garrison, Ron Springs, Robert Newhouse, and Moose Johnston. Just a thought….maybe we’ve fallen in love too much with all the talented wideouts and it’s perhaps made our offense a little predictable while also making us do things in the Redzone that aren’t our normal offense.
