I dont get it. I'm just surprised he has been brushed under the rug, especially given his position. So here's a hype thread.

We all agree we need DT help.

He was ranked in the top 10 FA interior DL by PFF (https://www.profootballfocus.com/ne...sive-linemen-set-to-enter-free-agency-in-2019)

He's making a position/scheme change that is pretty straightforward and often works out well. He's only 25 and has been learning from the likes of Watt and now Marinelli.

His one year deal suggests "bridge player" but he has way more upside than our previous bridge players at DT, guys like Mincey and McClain and Hayden.

His contract is beautiful. At max value, we're looking at 75%+ of snaps and 6+ sacks for only 2.5M:

A breakdown of Christian Covington’s one-year deal with the Cowboys:
Signing bonus: $500,000
Base salary: $1 million
46-man roster bonuses: $250,000
Cap number: $1.6875 million
55 percent play-time: $125,000
65 percent play-time: $250,000
75 percent play-time: $500,000
Four sacks: $125,000
Six sacks: $250,000
Base value: $1.75 million
Max value: $2.5 million

I think he's one of our top DTs right now. This guy is probably going to play a lot for us this year and I think he's going to do really well here. I'm excited to see what he brings and I'm hoping he hits that max value.

Me too! Woods, Covington, Collins and Crawford is a pretty decent rotation IMO. If we land Quinn, with Taco, Hyder, Armstrong and a decent draft pick...

Bro, I wouldn't mind a true NT plugger with power, quickness, tenacity and aggressiveness like Western Illinois NT/DT Khalen Saunders (6'1", 320). He moves, cuts and runs so well for an interior big guy because he actually used to be a RB coming out of high school. He could even play the role like a mini-me refrigerator Perry on offense in goal line situations.

He’s ceiling is Terrell McClain. He might be solid in our scheme.

McClain and Covington have the same career sack total. Convington is 5 years younger.

McClain's best year was 2.5 sacks and 39 tackles at the age of 28. That's one less sack than Covington had last year, and it's the only time McClain has beat Covington's single season tackle total. Coincidentally, McClain's career year was also his healthiest year in Dallas.

Covington's single season TFL personal best is higher than McClain's. Covington only has one less career TFL.

Covington's single season QB hits personal best is higher. Also only one less QB hit on the career for Covington.

Covington even has more passes defended on the career.

To say that Covington's ceiling is a guy he's already surpassed at 5 years younger is simply not true.

I like Covington. But he is a rotational player. We still need more help along the DL besides him and ideally Covington isn’t getting a majority of snaps at DT.

It is what people do on here, many do not like anything or any player.
I think at least he will be some good depth, and a good rotational player. At least he will be on the field unlike Irving. And that is a huge plus.

I think this is the issue with all of the free agents we've brought in. I like the Hyder, Covington, Cobb and Iloka signings, but I can't say for certain that any of them make us a better team. There's reason to hope, but there are also question marks about exactly what they can add to this team. We don't sign bona fide, can't-miss FAs because the front office doesn't want to pay what it takes for those type players. So we have to take and wait-and-see approach, hoping that the team has uncovered players more like Antwaun Woods than Allen Hurns or Nolan Carroll or Deonte Thompson or Damontre Moore or Robert Blanton or Byron Bell ...

In 2017, the only FA who worked out decently for us was Stephen Paea, starting at nose tackle until he got hurt and then retired. Last year, we did a little better. Woods was a great addition as starting 1-tech and Joe Thomas and Cameron Fleming were solid backups. Hurns wasn't worth what we paid, but isn't a bad player.

I too like the Covington signing. He is being underrated big time by all. We are not asking him to come in and be Donald or Watt, but he definitely is an upgrade on the rotation we had last season at DT over Reid. Like some have mentioned the Crawford, Collins, Woods and Covington rotation at DT is a solid rotation. One player also that doesn't get mentioned but can also play DT is Hyde. He is a darkhorse in all of the DL discussion. This guy was an up and comer before tearing his ACL. If he's healthy he has the ability to become a stud for us based on past statistics and play.

Nice thread topic! I agree that Covington looks like a good player identification and a really nice get. And yet another extremely reasonable contract, that has low risk and the potential of high rewards. I've read in several places that they felt he was miscast in a 3-4 defense and should really thrive in a 4-3. And I think in this case, both the player and the team agree. That's why I think he signed a one year deal. He's confident in himself and his abilities and believes that this scheme will fit him well and allow him to reach his full potential for that next contract.

Jonathan Cooper was far and away the best free agent signing that year. Paea was a bust, and damaged goods when they signed him.

will he be coached by Marinelli? other than tank, learning under our current dc hasn't been a fast track to the pro bowl.

Actually Woods last season transformed into a viable DT under this DC. In the past players like Hatcher and McLain also excelled to their better seasons before leaving. Gregory if not due to weed issues would be a star in this league. Same thing with Irving.

So to say this DC or Marinelli specifically hasn't had success with projects is false.

So why didn't Houston try to resign him considering it's peanuts in NFL standards. Typical over hyping of a player by fans, the team looked at as a backup when signed... then screaming to cut him by fans when reality sets in! What little I remember of him was average. Two friends that are Houston fans viewed him as a 3rd down talent and pointed that most of his sacks came from the qb being chased into him by another player and were not the result of his actual rush!
