I am definitely not in favor of trading our two number one picks or a 1 and a 2to get one of the veteran WR's. I especially would not give more than our #28 for Boldin. Boldin is a very very good WR, but he's a #2 possession type receiver on a team that has struggled to run the ball his entire career. He doesn't get deep, nor does he command double coverage...he is clearly second fiddle to Fitzgerald.
Would I like to have him as our #2 guy? Of course, but he's not a breakaway elite #1 guy, and therefore, I would not give multiple picks for him.
Impact RBs and WRs are found every year on day two...I'd be thrilled to find a rookie version of Marcus Colston.
If we could land a Chad, Anquan, or RoyW with our #28 pick, of course that would be a good move, but we do not need to play the multiple picks game to get a guy that other teams are bidding for...getting into a draft pick bidding war is even dumber (in my opinion) than getting into a high priced FA bidding war.
Just because this year's draft does not have a clearcut elite, blue chipper at WR doesn't really have any impact on the Cowboys. Take this year's very deep crop of WR's and add a Calvin Johnson and a Braylon Edwards to it...that wouldn't even change anything regarding WR's for us because those guys would be long gone before we pick anyway. Last year Ted Ginn, Jr went in the top 10...a little crazy, but if we can get a similar player at the bottom of round 1 or in round 2, that's a good thing.
There are plenty of very good WR's who, at the bottom of round one or in round 2, would come in and have an impact on our team unless the guys in front of them on paper (Glenn if healthy and Stanbeck if as good as advertised) turn out to have super years.
We don't need to panic and give away extra picks to get a guy that we think will be that "WOW" guy for the offense. We need to get depth at CB...we need depth at RB...and we need to take the right WR at the right place in the draft. There are also other positions that can make us a better team, including the fact that we are actually in desperate need of some rookies who can be impact players on the coverage units. Our coverage units didn't make me stand up and cheer last year, and now we've lost key parts to that unit.
In my opinion, we can't afford to give away draft picks. Let's not forget we already have three WOW players on offense in Tony Romo, Jason Witten, and Terrell Owens, along with a very impressive RB with something to prove in MBIII. Just because JJ mentioned wanting to add a wow factor weeks ago doesn't mean we NEED to do so on offense at the cost of other positions in the draft. I'm also not a huge Crayton fan, but he should be better in his second year as a starter, and a guy drafted in round 1 or 2 just may move him back to #3.
I'll be thrilled if we add a RB who can give us some Wow plays this year, a WR who can compete for playing time like Kevin Smith did in NY last season, assuming Glenn and Stanbeck are flops, and a CB who can come in and play better than Reeves did. The RB, CB, and WR we bring to the team in this draft simply have to perform better than Julius Jones, Reeves, and Hurd performed in their roles last season for us to be a better team...add Zach Thomas and possibly Pacman Jones to the equation, along with the possibility of a 3rd RB, WR, or even FB with some of the draft picks some are so easily willing to throw into a deal, and I like the way our offseason and the upcoming draft are looking.
