JaMarcus Russell-QB- Raiders Mar. 16 - 2:33 am et

According to one Raiders player interviewed Monday, no one on the team knows JaMarcus Russell's current whereabouts.

"Nobody has heard anything about where he's at," said the player. The Oakland Tribune reported Monday that there was "talk" Russell might show for day two of the conditioning program, but we won't know until later Tuesday. Naturally, this will spark speculation that Russell is overweight, as usual.

03-15) 21:40 PDT -- The Raiders' quarterback competition unofficially began Monday with the start of voluntary workouts. So far it's a two-horse race, with neither one named JaMarcus Russell.

The 2007 No. 1 overall draft pick was not seen by teammates at team headquarters Monday, and no one interviewed has any idea where he has been this offseason.

The Raiders do know the whereabouts of the two quarterbacks who leapfrogged Russell into the starting lineup last season. Bruce Gradkowski has been at the team facility all month, and Charlie Frye arrived Monday after signing his restricted-free-agent contract.

"Signed it Sunday," Frye said of his one-year, $1.226 million pact. "Ready to go."

So is Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Condo, another restricted free agent who signed his second-round contract tender of $1.68 million, according to a league source.

Russell is under contract for $9.5 million next season, but he was nowhere to be found.

Raiders coach Tom Cable said at the NFL combine there would be an open competition. That's in contrast with last year, when Russell was crowned the starter in the offseason.

"Nobody has heard anything about where he's at," said one starting player, on the condition of anonymity.

Briefly: Free safety Hiram Eugene has yet to sign his second-round tender, but he signed a release so he can work out with the team. ... Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey said his injured right foot is healed. He missed the final month of the season.

OK, I'll be fair even though I love picking on this guy:

12:25 PM ET 03.16 | There may be a slimmer quarterback for the Raiders come training camp.In case you missed it, Raiders director of squad development Willie Brown said on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area Monday that quarterback JaMarcus Russell has undergone a transformation in the offseason and wasn't present at the first day of the offseason program tending to personal business. "He's trying to close a home in Alabama. It's something that he couldn't get out of," Brown said. "You don't want to lose your home. So he'll be back in town today and ready to go (Tuesday)."

JaMarcus Russell reportedly has lost quite a bit of weight

3/16/2010 11:22:28 AM

Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune reports Raiders director of squad development Willie Brown said on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area Monday that quarterback JaMarcus Russell has undergone a transformation in the offseason and wasn’t present at the first day of the offseason program tending to personal business.

“He’s trying to close a home in Alabama. It’s something that he couldn’t get out of,” Brown said. “You don’t want to lose your home. So he’ll be back in town today and ready to go (Tuesday).”

Brown, talking with Raiders play-by-play announcer Greg Papa on “Chronicle Live,” alluded to personal problems Russell experienced last season and said the quarterback has been in Phoenix getting in shape, a long-running rumor neither the Raiders nor Russell’s agents would confirm.

“You’ll be surprised when you see him,” Brown said. “It’s quite a bit of weight that he’s lost . . . I don’t want to pin it down and say how much he lost but it will be a significant difference when you see him compared to last year.

The guy is a bum, but I would rather prefer he pan out.

Call me crazy, but I think the NFL is better off when the Raiders are competitive.

I'd say he was the NFL equivalent of "The biggest loser" but even after losing weight the title will still apply :)
