No Reaction to 72?

I got no response to it in my longer thread, but I'm really curious to hear what others have to say about #72, Bowman.

Was I the only one thrilled with what I saw from the guy today? I kept seeing #72 in the backfield all day long. He had a sack from DT, he drilled Kitna just as he released the ball on at least two other occasions, and he was actually in the picture and pushing the pocket all game long.

I thought our DL played the best they've played in months...Ware, Coleman, Bowman, even CAnty who drilled Kitna on the overthrow when Williams was running free behind Newman. It's not just the sacks...we hit the QB more today than in a long long time, and we were actually pushing the middle back for a change...we forced Kitna out of the pocket quite a bit.

I know we're all disappointed with the defense, and I put it all on the secondary and scheme...I have no clue how so many RB's and receivers catch easy balls over the middle on us without being hit by someone...it seemed our LBs were actually behind the receivers, never in front of them.

Still, anyone else pleasantly surprised by #72's play today?

I guess. It's hard to get excited about anything in regard to our defense.

I too was happy to see him very active out there. But realistically, he will not set foot on the field again. The kid was playing on instinct and know how. That is a no no in Zimmers world. He wants his players to play technically sound, and tie up blockers. Damn be the sacks and QB pressures, all that means nothing if you are not tying up the man in front of you.

The LBs have no feel for zone coverage. They watch the QB, but have no idea where the receivers are located. James also does not move well laterally, which makes it difficult to make plays on the ball.

Different words, but this is EXACTLY the sentiment I was going to post. I agree with Wayne that Bowman looked really good. But as Mr. Cowboy says, Zimmer and Parcells will soon cure him of that!

Didn't they say Detroit's offensive line had 3 rookies starting their first or second game today?

Yes, I was.

Combined with the DEtroit quotes about us playing 4 deep across, maybe this is the best argument yet for playing Watkins and Parrish/Henry deep (we did see henry lined up like a safety a few times today) and playing Roy in the box in the nickel when the other team comes with 3 receivers...I'd like to see Roy drilling some people over the short middle where we're getting hurt right now.

I know we'd be risking getting beat deep from time to time, but this getting bled to death slowly up and down the field and never getting a stop is getting old fast.

Both Bowen and Glymph looked pretty good. The pressure is never there though, and aside from maybe one or two plays they didn't contrubte a whole lot.

The problem is that we're wanting Canty and Spears to be pressure players when it's not their job. That's a by-product of a vanilla defensive scheme the Zimmer/Parcells brain trust has us working. No blitzes up the middle... ever, it seems. So we're looking to the wrong people for pressure.

I can't tell you how happy I'd be if the Cowboys went back to a 4-3.

NO, that fifth round rookie has started at guard all year for them, and Peterman was at the other guard...I get your point, but the big fat three we'd been playing in the 3 man front weren't doing anything against anyone, so I was happy to see some pressure.

It certainly exposed the scheme when you get that kind of pressure and your secondary still can't cover anyone.

two rookies and Peterman, the 3rd rd bust who couldnt make it here

and one of their rookie tackles got hurt and was replaced by somebody I had absolutely never heard of...

the Lions starters on the OL were already bad, and we were playing against mostly their backups...still their QB and receivers killed us, and we still gave up over 100 yds rushing

I think Bowman is a casualty of Bill's mentality that if you don't practice well, you don't play. There are just some guys that practice crappy but show up on Sunday. He may be one...too bad he never really got a shot to show us what he's got.

hard to be too excited when half the board don't even know his name

What I do know is the 4-3 thing was not a magic pill
We need these guys to play better; much, much better.

I thought our defense was close to being fully built but a this is just disheartening.

I like Zimmer but am all for him moving along if only for a desperate attempt to get better play out of these guys.
