Forget About A Trade For Gaither
Posted by jellis at 4/23/2010 3:04 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com
A pretty popular idea in some quarters has been for the Cowboys to trade a second-round pick to Baltimore for tackle Jared Gaither. But we can now say with some certainty, that it’s not happening.

Gaither, a restricted free agent, has not signed his tender. Because he’s not technically under contract just yet, the Ravens can’t trade him during the draft.

By not selecting a tackle in the first round the Cowboys have reaffirmed their stance on the position. Doug Free is likely to start on the left side, with guard Leonard Davis potentially serving as a backup to he and right tackle Marc Colombo.

The Cowboys also have tackles Pat McQuistan and Robert Brewster, a third-round pick last year. The Cowboys could add offensive line help with their second-round pick on Friday, but they don’t think they necessarily have to.

“We’ve got a plan on our offensive line that is a good one,” Jerry Jones said Thursday. “I think that can be satisfactory to us if we didn’t draft the outstanding offensive lineman

Well that will be crushing to some but that also means that it doesn't keep Dallas from doing something after the draft with the Ravens for him. That would mean giving up something in next years draft to get him but I guess if you feel he's worth it and you're that close this year then you'd go ahead and make that move.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

That totally kills a lot of baseless speculation!

Not really all that interested in Gaither but I will be disappointed if we do not add players to the OL be it in the draft or with a vet after the draft

Amazing what a restricted free agent can do.

It would not surprise me that the Cowboys' front office anticipated this and planned their offseason/tackle acquisition strategy somewhat accordingly. Who they may draft should prove interesting.

That's a very good point, and one I was thinking about yesterday although not related to Gaither. I don't really see us trading for Gaither, but even after the draft we could make player trades to fill holes or gain depth through decent players cut by other teams between draft time and the end of pre-season.

most players are pretty selfish as regards their careers. And if they are not they should be. Its a short career usually, and can end at any time. I do not blame any of them for trying to get as much as they can. Though I draw the line with Rookies- those bumbs deserve nothing but the minimum.

I believe that means the Ravens can resign him for last years salary +10% (because he didn't sign by the deadline) which I'm guessing is cheaper than he was? (someone?)

If JJ thinks we can have an outstanding OL even WITHOUT drafting a OL guy, he must know something I do not.

Or....he is lying...

Or...his toupee is too tight.
