I agree he doesnt necessarily have to interview him, but why not just give him the DC job? He's even interviewing Dave Campo for the DC job...

49ers | Nolan has not interviewed Singletary for DC job
Mon, 22 Jan 2007 21:59:42 -0800

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan has not interviewed assistant head coach Mike Singletary for the team's vacant defensive coordinator position. Nolan said he does not have to interview Singletary because he knows all he needs to know about him. When asked why he wouldn't just name Singletary the defensive coordinator, Nolan said, "Because Mike is the assistant head coach. For some people, it's just a title and it means nothing. To me, it means a lot of things. I don't want to detract from any of those things

I think Singletary may not be quite ready for the jump to coordinator or head coach. He is probably more ready to be DC than HC, but who knows. You truly never know when one is ready, but he has only been in coaching a few years. I thought Jack Del Rio was elevated from an assistant to DC for one year and then to head coach way to fast. He has proven me wrong and shown to be a decent head coach. I just don't trust guys that have that fast of a rise. It didn't work for Mike Tice who never even held down a coordinator position.

I do think it is odd that Camp has been interviewed. San Fran had wanted to run a 3-4 scheme, but due to injuries kind of got stuck running the 4-3. Maybe they plan on keeping the 4-3 and therefore Campo would be a decent choice. If they want to run the 3-4, Campo is not the guy and then maybe they do just give Singletary the duel title.

I like the idea of Singletary of as HC of the Cowboys, as long as he let an experienced OC come in to run the offense, say like Hennings. He is experienced in the 3-4 and I'm sure he could find a capable DC to help run it.

Getting guy X only if we can get coordinator Y is a very difficult proposition -- and not a likely one. That said, I think if Jerry really wants to take a flier he needs to go Singletary or even Garrett as the HC.

4-6 has 4 down lineman correct? i would say a 4-6 is closer to a 4-3 than a 3-4. but you get me point

I dont think Mike S can be approached to be the DC of the Cowboys, regardless of who we hire as a HC. If I read what Nolan said correctly, he is the asst headcoach at SF. This would mean that in order to talk to him, without permission, would be a promotion, which would be a HC job. I want no part of him as a HC right now.

He has been a LB coach in the 3-4 for the last 2 years first in Baltimore now in San Fran. There is a reason Nolan wants him to continue his ***. head coach duties, is strongest asset is that he is respected as a true leader and I'm sure he is being groomed to be a head coach, I say surround with an experienced staff and let him learn on the job here.

Head coaches and coordinators are more than just pumping your fists. Its an administrative job in nature. It requires attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Obviously, Nolan doesn't feel like Singletary has them. He'll keep him on the sidelines as a positonal coach and let him make the rah-rah speeches.

Well I think since they hung the "***. head coach" label on him it says otherwise. His value must be more then just a rah-rah guy if they wanted to assure the only way they could lose him was if it was th a head coaching position.
