When I was a kid I remember watching this infamous moment live. Poor Robin Ventura did not know what he was getting in to when he chose to charge the mound. I am sure many of you remember it and/or have seen the iconic still photos of the incident. This video has been quite difficult to find online, but mlb.com has finally posted the complete video on their video site.

Enjoy!!!

You are going to make Hostile wet his pants when he sees this again.

I'll go ahead and predict his response (notice the insane amount of "bland")

"Thank you. I liked that."

I remember seeing that game. I was big Nolan fan and still am and to see Ventura charge the mound and see Nolan put him in a head lock like he did was too funny

Ventura really made a no-win decision that night. Only two results could come out of charging the mound... neither good for him...

Scenario 1: Charge the mound; kick Ryan's tail.

Public Reaction: Classy, Ventura charged the mound and beat up a 45 year old future Hall of Famer.

Scenario 2: Charge the mound; get your tail kicked by Ryan.

Public Reaction: Ha Ha Ha, Ventura charged the mound and got beaten up by a 45 year old future Hall of Famer.

Stupid on Ventura's part...

Incidentally, when Ryan retired from the Rangers, his teammates gave him two cows as a gift. They had named them "Robin" and "Ventura"... :D

Even as an old man Nolan was not a guy you wanted to go after the man is strong as an ox and one of the few I have seen who after pitching 9 inning would put in an hour work out right after the game. Nolan fast ball lasted as long as it did because Nolan kept himself in tip top shape. Most fast ballers do not last as long as Nolan did

True, Nolan used to ride the stationary bike for about 20-30 minutes after he pitched. When the game was over, he used to make the media wait around while he did this. He refuse to talk to them beforehand because he deemed it that important.

He really was an anomaly...

Check this out...

Ryan is the all-time leader in no-hitters with seven, three more than any other pitcher. He is tied with Bob Feller for most one-hitters, with 12. Ryan also pitched 18 two-hitters. He took 9 games as no-hitters into the ninth inning before surrendering a hit. He also had a five-hitter on Robin Ventura's face.

Jeff Torborg was the catcher for the Angels when Ryan was in California Ryan threw two no-hitters in 1973. Torborg swears that Ryan threw a third no-hitter that year, but the scorekeeper wrongly credited a player with a hit that game.

The California boy thought he could go out and whip up on the old man, and he got a good ole country butt-whoopin. :laugh2:

I was lucky enough to see 2 of them in person and the amazing one on TV that he threw when he went to the rangers. What was amazing is he was throwing a no hitter in his 40's

I have a baseball card of that scene. On the bottom of the card it's captioned. "This aint a no hitter"...lol

Ryan is a bad ***, I'm from his home town. he owns land right outside of town, its pretty cool growing up in a town where you stand behind a legend in line at the grocery store. especially as a kid you are just awe struck. he is very friendly but you can tell sometimes he just wants to not be bothered, its why i have never gone up to celebrities when i have seen them, i don't want to add to the people that are already bothering them

He'll also mention how Nolan Ryan changed his life. ;) j/k Hos!

Is there a story behind that? Did Ryan do that on purpose?

Not much of a fight. Ryan landed some noogies and one semi-decent uppercut. After that a lot of hugging. Baseball needs more of that action to save it. Fewer and fewer are watching MLB nowadays.

Bad deal for Robin. Even though he only took a couple decent shots (most were to the top of the head) he still looked foolish for trying it.
